Wink OSLPD- a new neurosis for us musicians- dangerous!

My financial advisor just warned me of a new malady that has been increasingly on the rise for musicians who use sampled libraries and computers. It's called OSLPD and it's a very serious condition. It's short for Obsessive Sample Library Purchase Disorder and the side effects are:

buying more than a few orchestral sample libraries even when one or two is fine

Yeah, I have this. I own:

EWQLSO Silver, Gold and Platinum XP
    EWQL Symphonic Choirs
    HALion Symphonic Orchestra
    MOTU Symphoniv Instrument
Apple Symphonic Jam Pack (twice-have it stand-alone and in Logic 8)
VSL Vienna SE Standard and Expanded
    Kirk Hunter Sapphire
    SAM Horns
    SAM Solo Sessions
Kontakt 1, 2, and 3 (including VSL library)

Buying more than one DAW/sequencer because they come with neat plug ins

    Yup. Me again.
    Logic Express 7, 8
    Logic Studio 8
    Sonar 3 through to 7
    Digital Performer 5.12
    Cubase 4.1
then there's also NOTION, Overture and Finale for notation.

Going through a multiplicity of computers to get the best performance

    Er, yeah. I currently have:

    Mac G5 2.0 ghz DP w. 4 gigs RAM
AMD Athlon X2 with 4 gigs RAM
AMD Athlon 2.4 ghz w. 2 gb RAM
Macbook Core Duo 2 1.83 ghz w. 1 gb RAM

Going through endless interations of keyboard controllers to find the one that best works with the sampled libraries

    This is a biggy.
    Axiom 25, 49, and 61
    Kurzweil SP2X, PC1SE
    Korg K61P
    CME controllers
    Roland controllers
    Yamaha Mo6, and Mo8
    and so-on and so-on.

So, does anyone else exhibit these signs? If so, well....welcome to the club!

It looks like you get the "basic" libraries from just about all manufacturers.. I have about as many libraries as you but I normally go with ones that specialize in particular things that I need.. Otherwise one ends up with a zillion of the basic articulations and very few or no advanced articulations.

Not so much as you, but I'm certainly eager to buy online things... I rarely take opportunities on group buys and stuff actually!

But now just after the summer I got:

New sound card (a Lynx, great one)
New keyboard (didn't have any, so got a Casio PX110, which also serves me great)
    will get
    NEw monitors
    New amps
    New stands
    New desk

In all something like 4000-4500$. Plenty of money in my books. Nothing else until later this year, I reckon. Unless I make some real profit, apart from making up the expenses really soon.

Sure, I've got that and the male pattern bald thing kickin' in and I could stand to loose 10 or 15 pounds.

Yes, this certainly IS something to pay attention for. Well, you could say that I don't have the "OSLPD" since I don't have many libs of the same type (for example, I don't have many orchestral libs.), BUT, I do have the "pressure" to buy the new stuff, or just the "cool stuff" I found about. Like when something new and cool is released or I just find something new, and... if I like it... urgh, GOTTA HAVE IT!! And sometimes it's really difficult to stop thinking of this special something, it's almost like... being in love? Thankfully, I realised and became aware of this problem quite early by myself, so I haven't spend a fortune on anything "unnecessary". But still, when I find something really really great... oh, I just have to get it somehow, ASAP, period.

So, stop buying new stuff you dont need, especially if you cant really afford it, and spend time instead writing/making/playing music. Am I being too simple minded?

At least it sounds better than the malady we guitarists suffer from.....
    G.A.S. ( Guitar Acquisition Syndrome )

I still remember the time I was at the guitar show and an exhibitor asked me if I had gas. I didn't think anyone would notice.....
