GS3 Restarting My Computer Like 10 Times a Day?

Hi. I have GS3 Ensemble, and have had it for just over a year. I've never had a problem with it until just about 3 weeks ago. Now it keeps crashing my computer almost every hour, sometimes more frequently. Basically my computer just restarts. this has happened even when there were no other programs open except GS3.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? I know there could be a bunch of things, but I wondered if there were a few common things I could check. I really don't know how to decipher the diagnostic reports to pinpoint the root cause. Maybe someone here knows how to.

Anyway, if there were a way I could fix this...I MIGHT be able to reach my deadeline for this Thursday. But if not....grrrr!

    Thanks.

Off the top of my head...

    * A virus, adware or bot. (Run some clean up software, temporarily.)

    * Your RAM developed a bad spot, or the timing has been on edge, and it's now over the edge. (Run Prime95 overnight. Search Wikipedia for more info...)

    * A bad sector has developed on your hard drive. (Run a low-level disc scan.)

    * A fan has failed in your case and the PC is overheating. (Check your fans. Remove dust from vents and heatsinks.)

    Best of luck...

The first thing to think about is what may have changed about three weeks ago...

    Did you add/remove any programs?

    Did you update any programs?

    Windows update?

    Add/remove hardware?

What version of Giga are you running?

    Hrm.....

If you de-select the QuickSound Database's "Monitor File Activity," does that calm things down any?

Have you added any new samples or VST instruments or anything else to your system?

Set the PC to display the BSOD (disable auto restart) when it crashes and let us know what the messages are. Knowing this we might be able to better assist you in your plight.

I have been through this dilemma several times over the past few years, on nearly every occassion it was something different, thankfully my system is now stable.

    cheers

Thanks for all the suggestions! I will give thought to all those things. ONe thing I did last night was update to the latest firmware for GS3 Ensemble. After that, it didn't crash for about 2 hours. That isn't necessarily proof of a fix, but maybe it worked. I'll also try to disable the auto-restart...again. I think I did that before, and it still restarted.

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions. One thing I'm going to do when I can afford it is get a new computer for my audio stuff only, no gaming, etc. Maybe it'll work better on that system. If not, I may try putting GS on my old computer and interface it with the audio one.

    Thanks again!

One thing for sure: disable automatic file monitoring. I'm not at my GS3 machine right now, but it's not too hard to find.

When you add a new lib, you will now need to trigger a database rebuild manually. But if it no longer crashes...

    Hey Ken,

Fingers crossed that the recent update has fixed everything.

If you're up to the technical challenge, and if you have sufficient hard drive space, you could consider setting up a dual-bootable-partition setup on your existing machine. I've written about that here, before, so run a search if you're interested...
