"He was amazed to see a pianist pull a single strand of fishing line through the strings of a piano,..."

Odd that they don't credit the composer that created the technique. It was Curtis Curtis-Smith, a composer who was on the piano faculty of Western Michigan University at the time.

I got to hear the world's premier of several of his pieces using the technique because I was lucky enough to be a student there at the time. He was much more interesting than the composition teachers.

I knew Stephen Scott was using the bowing technique, but I'd never heard his music. Thanks for posting the link.

I saw a story on Scott on TV about 20 years ago and was fascinated with the sounds he was coming up with. Good to see he's still exploring.

    Keith,
Thanks very much for sharing this. I am amazed at the sounds they produce and the resulting music. A completely new experience for me that I really like. I'm off to purchase the CD!

i'm curious if he does notate the music, or if he just tells the other players what to do, or if they improvise?

At the end of the PBS video it shows his scores and some of the modifications he makes to traditional methods. For instance he has to have each player on the score, he uses a color coded system for something, and includes line charts for instrument specific annotation! The resulting sound scape is nothing short of amazing.

The CD arrived a couple of days ago and I finally listened to it last night. An awesome array of sounds. I was especially taken with the sound of the bowed bass strings, and I'd love to use that sound in something someday.
