GS4 on 64 bit os, which one??

OK I have 2 dedicated giga PCs currently and like many of you am chompin at the bit to get my copies of GS4 upgrades!

The only question I have is when GS4 is out do i want to upgrade my XP Pro 32 bit machines to VISTA 64 or XP 64? and which version of these OS's should I upgrade to?

These machines ONLY host gigastudio, well and one has EmulatorX. But mostly just giga and the soundcard drivers (RME HDSP 9652 which support 64 bit os's)

Everything that I've heard/read from TASCAM folks, thus far, points directly and exclusively to XP64.

on the tascam site "The new version supports 64-bit operating systems like XP64 and Windows Vista 64, allowing users to access up to 128 gigabytes of RAM for..."

So Alan does your post mean you have info from the inside and while xp64 and vista64 should both *in theory* support the same software, everyone at Tascam is dev'ing on xp64 and there is no testing or support for vista really? I guess it says "like" those OS's and not directly those OS's LOL *cry*

Re: GS4 on 64 bit os, which one??

My understanding is that GS4 runs on both. I have no idea about "official" support for Vista. However, the word is that XP64 offers better performance. That's consistent with all of the audio app numbers that I've seen published.

I've also read that XP64 will be available until June. That's just from one casual source. It would be good to get the official story.

I'm wondering... will Vista become the new Windows ME?

AFAIK, GS4 is being tested on both XP and Vista. The XP64-over-Vista64 recommendations strike me as more personal/"common-sense" suggestions.

XP has been tried tested for a long time, the most useful XP tweaks for music performance are pretty well documented, and the necessary hardware drivers are (more'r less) in place. Vista (again, AFAIK) has none of this yet.

OK From the MusicLab (MIDIOverLAN) website:

    MolCp3 System requirements:

    • 256MB RAM (1GB+ recommended), 50MB+ free hard drive space, Network ethernet 100Mbps/Gigabit/WiFi/AirPort interface(s)
    • PC: Windows 2000 SP4/Windows XP SP2/Vista x32, Pentium 3/4 1+ GHz (Intel Core 2 Duo recommended), DirectX 9.0c
    • Mac: Mac OSX 10.4/10.5, G4/G5 1+ GHz (Intel Core 2 Duo recommended)
so.... what are you guys going to use for midi communication? Going back to wired midi interfaces?

I'm not at all familiar with MIDIOverLAN (so... advance apologies if I'm way off-base) but, when I looked here:

    http://www.musiclab.com/products/rpl_new.htm

    I saw references to XP64...???

You can download the trial version from MS and purchase a license from them.

That may be with Windows 7 in the process. If I didn't have to purchase a whole machine I would probably consider the new Mac OS.

I don't get the brilliance behind marketing Vista as a more secure OS. To me that's like Delta saying chances of survival are good if one of our planes goes down. I just looked at a VIsta box today and nothing on it says "buy me".

They should have promoted XP 64 bit a lot more.

I think I'll stay in the 32 bit world until MS comes up with something better than Vista.
