Congrats to the composer DanielB and to the performer, Mr. Sibelius.

PS. And DanielB - time to get cracking on the OC 17 theme ...

Well done to all three entrants! It is indeed gratifying to hear others work on your melody, especially putting such hard work and thought into it.

You got my vote, Daniel. I enjoyed your clear rendering and varied instrumentation, and the way you kept things simple and let the tune sing out. Do I understand correctly that you are only 13 years old?

Having said all that, I enjoyed the other two entries as well. #1 had some inventive material and development of the theme. You took my theme to some unexpected and delightful places.

#3: I thought the use of the drone-like quality of the accompaniment to be very appropriate. The harmonic choice was very inventive, and I liked how it was developed in a somewhat Eastern style. See, I thought it didn't have to be Scottish!

Once again, thanks to all that participated, and the 24 people that took the trouble to listen to the work and vote.

And again, congratulations to Daniel for the winning vote! The task now falls to you to submit a theme for Challenge #17. I am happy to hand over the challenge to you now.

Ok, I did number 3. I liked number 2 alot, great use of Sibelius. I used Finale and then Sonar to do the editing anf mixing (for the guy that asked.)

    Congrats Daniel B

    Congratulations, Daniel!

I really liked the realism and clean performance of your pizzicato strings in your Entry #2. You and I both tossed the melody to the clarinet which I think works very well. I believe you chose the Bb clarinet which sings very smoothly whereas I chose the Eb clarinet for my submission (Entry #1) because it was somewhat edgy and reminded me of Mahler. I also liked your horn duet. I'm a horn player and those intervals seemed very convincing. Well done!

Like my two colleagues, I too used a notation product. In my case, I used Finale 2008 exclusively even though I still have to fulfill one of my 2008 resolutions which is to use Sonar for post-composition rendering. I tend to find myself running out of time with the composition and never get to have fun with the performance rendering. ;-)

Bill, you and I both chose the tambourine to spice up the beat! It does add a sultry flavor, yes? I could feel your Entry #3 transporting me back to ancient Persia.

Owen, I enjoyed working with your melody and I learned a lot in doing some research on the Highland bagpipes. Perhaps you noticed how I folded in a variation of the Battel of Hayrlau!

Congratulations, again Daniel, and I'm looking forward to working on your melody for the upcoming Challenge #17!

    Regards,

    Ken

Thank you! And yes, you do understand correctly. In fact, I bought Sibelius with my Christmas and Birthday money (Educational Edition; $300), and GPO was my 13th birthday gift from my parents, bundled with Sibelius (for $150, not a bad deal). Yes, I'm spoiled.

Thank you! I'm not sure if my fast pizzicato tremolos are possible though. I was sort of able to do it on my cello, but just really soft, and sloppy.

And I did use a Bb Clarinet; never actually used any other clarinets (besides Bass Clarinet). I guess I should explore....

I actually already have the theme. Very simple, but very versatile chord progression and style/"feel"-wise. I'll post it within a couple of days once I have the MIDI, MP3, PDF and JPG files ready.

Also, thank you, David (etLux), wrayer, David (Leaf), and Gunther for the congratulations.
