    How often do you practice?

Since getting involved in computer music without really noticing I've been neglecting playing a real instrument and my playing has suffered because of this (ok, I'm a banjo player so maybe it doesn't count).

Recently I started making the effort to practice again, going back to basics and starting with scales etc. At the gig last night I played better than I had done for ages.

So, has sitting in front of a computer affected your playing? Maybe you're a keyboard player and it helps since you're playing anyway? Do you use your score writer or sequencer more than a live instrument?

Since becoming a high school teacher, 10 years ago, I've done about two hours' practise a year. Sucks!!!

I played trumpet for 35 years, but after playing professionally it became more of a job, and I didn't enjoy it as much. I've given it up.

But recently I started playing a folk harp and have rediscovered the simple joy of making music. I try to practice 15-30 minutes each day. And while I'll never become a virtuoso, it's a part of the day that I look forward to.

It's not really playing when you're sequencing. It's only playing if you are doing a piano/organ/keyboard type of piece - which is rare these days. One used to tend to play in small lines - usually with the left hand because that's the way the system was set up in my case. Now it's changed to the right hand.

I play Bach for practice - currently a gigue - a prelude and a chromatic fantasy. Unless you play in front of people - it's always practice.

I uses to play 8 hours a day when I was getting ready for exams - which seemed to be always.

I used to manage that while in my last year at uni... then I spent the next year with chronic tendinitis, ganglions and back problems.

I'm like you Jeff. I was a freelance trumpet player for about 15 years and grew tired of really everything about freelancing and playing trumpet for that matter. I played for about another 5 years after that at church, but just couldn't shake what for me was the tedium of playing.

So for me, sitting at a computer composing is where it's at creatively. That certainly doesn't mean I won't want to play a "real" instrument in a few years though.

    Hi Tony,

I am sitting every day 8 or more hours in front of my computer, producing my radiospots or some music, alone, and I only have the forums in the internet to communicate then and then..., a welcoming variety!

And yes, at my dayly work I use my sequencer more than a live instrument (95%).

I play some instruments real, first the guitar. On the weekends I play often live my guitar in a band here and there and I love to play in front of an audience!

I don't really "set aside" practice time. My house has a LOT of instruments in it, EVERYWHERE. Whenever there's an instrument in front of me, I play. Usually it's the piano or cello, but sometimes, there's a guitar, ukulele or somethin' else sitting on the couch as I'm watching TV or something. I pick it up and start playing the melody of a song that's been stuck in my head (not very well I might add; piano is my specialty).

UNFORTUNATELY, Sibelius isn't with note input from a keyboard... Well, on my computer. But it hasn't really impaired time spent on real instruments, just lack of using real instruments when composing.

Well, my current time is from 1/2 hr to 2 hrs daily at the piano. My goal is 2 hours minimum daily. Also, I want to get back to my cornet and flugel horn, both of which serve to collect dust under the piano.Since I no longer do any gigs, and play where no one hears me, it is easy to get lazy, or to give up after a bit of pain. Years ago, it was 8 hours or more daily, on top of my days work, which was okay then, because I could get by with less sleep or catch a cat nap now and then. In my senior year of high school, I was famous for my ability to cut nearly all classes and still get good grades.

Re: How often do you practice?

Man, I used to practice minimum 8 hrs a day while attending the University in Buffalo. My primary instrument teacher strongly encouraged at least that amount or suffer having your lesson status reduced to once ever other week for a half hour instead of an hour lesson per week. Those were the days I would love to have back.
Presently, I practice when ever I can get the chance and now that I have my studio back the chance is more freely. I don't have a keyboard/controller and my notational software was damaged some how. Haven't gotten around to reinstalling.
I tend to practice more when called to do a fill in job or a show. I find it more enjoyable lately now that I am not a permanent member of a band.

Wednesday I see a hand specialist to find out whether the pain in my thumbs is carpal tunnel or arthritis. Good old Art Thritis. Such a sneaky son of a pain in the hands! Had Xrays done today by my primary doctor yet wont know until Wednesday. Today, I put in 2 hours of practice time on the drums learning music for a gig on the nineteenth.

Well, Hemingway ... time to get back to sound treating me room! Way to noisy in hear and too much reverberation!
