Topic: What Emotion?

    What Emotion?

A couple of weeks ago I purchased a new library that had a 2 for 1 sale. This is the first piece that I started out playing with. Normally I compose in Sibelius and then play with the file in Sonar. The new Library (unlike GPO) does not work that well with Sibelius, so I did this one completely in Sonar. It was quite a learning experience.

I knew as I was doing it that the piece was missing something and finally realized that I needed some more in the strings. So last night I added solo strings from GPO to each of the string sections. This, IMO, has made the piece. The GPO solos add such a great sound to this, that I plan on trying out other sections as well.

This is the beginning to a piece that I envision as a 6 - 8 minute piece.

I know the emotion I was after in this, but am curious as to whether or not I acheived my goal.

So what Emotion do you think this depicts?

    Here it is

For me? It leaves a sense of undecidedness with entangled
somewhat unfocused colorations of angst, regret, confused
sadness... an indeterminate state of underlying indecision.

You're ably developing some worthwhile additions to your
rendering palette in this, Ron. I like some of the string
timbres quite a lot in this.

    My best,

For some reason, I thought you might enjoy this one. I have spent a good deal of time getting everything right in this and it is only 2 minutes long so far, so I think I am getting the 4 horseman under my control.

    Thank you

    Thank you

Ron, you requested: "So what Emotion do you think this
depicts?" To which -- and I listened to this several times
to carefully gauge as best I could what I felt expressed
in it -- I replied with my impressions as accurately as I
    was able.

To me, this is "launch pad" material. It sets up a floor
of possibilities, which the listener will expect you to
explore, clarify, and give direction and meaning.

Where you take it from here is what will engage the
listener -- how you go about creating impetus and
conveying content that arises from the introductory

As far as the "four horsemen" -- yes, certainly, you've
come a very long way, my friend! My heavens, if you
need ample demonstration of that, listen to what you're
doing now, and what you were doing not too long ago.

    Always my best,

You are too good. This is a no brainer.
Hopeless despair and/or deep anguish due to a great personal loss or tragedy,
(or the Marx Brothers are about to meet the Frankenstein monster.) I'm betting on my first response.

    Great stuff

I get a sense of careful wandering through an unknown, dark, mysterious forest - alone and unsure of what lies ahead on the path. It certainly DOES evoke an emotion and it may well be different for different listeners.

Words can be misleading as much as my music. I mean one thing and say another. So long as the dual meanings do not lead to duel meetings.

It's late and I am tired, but I kinda like that last line,

I will reiterate, I always appreciate your input.

So close my friend. It's the Marx brothers meeting Godzilla.

And I think you have a brain and I wouldn't take that bet.

The pressure is on and now you can't Copy and paste, and you come up with the right one word! Good to hear from you. Hope all is well.

As many listeners is the number of emotions picked, yet they are all very similar, so I think I am on the right track.

    Thanks guys.

Ok, I'll duck the question - what does it mean to you? Music expresses things that words cannot, and vice versa; if we could really express the emotion in words, we'd have no need for music...

I will say that I find this quite beautiful, with a lot of color and range of dynamics, and a fine realization.

    Emotion? Hard to say. Literally...

    But very fine writing.

Were you in the Annapolis area (out by the Bay Bridge) on Saturday? I saw someone that could have been you, but wasn't sure, so I decided not to make a fool of myself if I was wrong.

I know the emotion/emotions I was looking for, but have found out lately that I am not the best judge of this. Since you enjoyed the music, I see no reason for you to have to state what emotion it depicted.

    Thank you
