Topic: Something A Little Dark

    Something A Little Dark

Okay, I realize this is my second post on the front page of the Listening Room, I just hope no one else goes and posts on one of my topics from a while back and brings it to the front page to make it 3 . Okay, so, I'm using black print to match the title of this song, "Something A Little Dark." For those of you who read my "Help! I'm using sharps!" post, this is the completed version of that. I added a third movement, as well as added percussion and changed the ending of the second movement.

This is titled "Something A Little Dark," because it is generally darker than most things I write... genius, huh?

The first two movements are pretty consistent with what I usually write, except it's in B minor. Oh no! Sharps! Oh well, I'll make up for it by writing something in C flat major some time... Other than the sharps, it does stay a bit more consistently in minor than most of my music that fluxuates between minor and major.

The third movement uses a lot more percussion than is typically found in my orchestral thingies, which is odd, considering I'm a percussionist...you might think I would use a lot more of it, but oh well

Other than that, for some reason I can't get the cello to decrescendo at the end, so that last note kind of sticks out... hope you enjoy it, and as always, I love comments!!!

    First part:

You show thoughtfulness for each instrument that enters and slowly craft beautiful layers of sound.

    Second part:

More triumphant in character and very cinematic. The use of percussion was tastefully imparted; and wonderful "blockbuster" brass melodies. The bell points to Elfman for me, yet isn't over used, but effectively placed.

    Great job on both!

I am not a music major, so I don't know all of the technical musical terms. I am not familiar with the term orchestral thingies. Is that related to Symphony Thingies. If so, then don't worry because that is what I compose, Symphony Thingies.

    Sorry, I had too!!

I don't see this as very dark, but then you did give a disclaimer saying it was dark for you. Parts of it seem very light and upbeat even.

It was however. a joy to listen to.

    Very well done

I always hold your comments, in high esteem, so they are much appreciated! But maybe that is just because we share the same first name . Yes, I feared I may have ventured to far into the realm of Elfman toward the end. Though I don't consider my stuff to be anywhere near his caliber, the feel was still there. So then I concluded unknowingly with a common Howard Shore modulation Though, it's a simple mod, (C major to C major with Ab instead of G...is that Ab minor VII?)

    Thanks again for your comment!

Yes, "thingies" is typically a term I don't just throw around on the public audience. I apologize for over-whelming your lackluster musical education with loaded terms such as this. I would explain to you the meaning of this, but I fear I would shame my mentors and University.

(Just to be sure it's clear, I'm just kidding... I've said something like that before and offended people )

Yes, honestly, when I thought of the title, I hadn't completed it yet, so I kind of strayed from the idea on the third movement.

Thanks again for commenting, I always love to hear your comments!

I just checked in today at the University of Maryland for a 6 week Math Thingie (yes in math we also have Thingies).

We are going to be studying types of math that I have never even heard of. 4 Professors, and classses from 9-5 and then group work until we go to bed. They have said we will have time to eat and sleep, but also said that they would not guarantee time for either. But at least I am getting paid for this.

I know what you mean about using highly techical jargon like thingie. Most of the normal public wouldn't know what us specialists are talking about.

Satire is my favorite form of comedy, so I see it even when it is not there.

Hmmmm, I think it may be an Augmented Chord with a raised 5th if you spell it C,E,G# in the key of FM (V+) --- maybe? i think?

What a delight, Michael! A seriously worthwhile listen.

I sympathize with your being a little challenged when
thinking up titles; but really, now, you must find something
more suitable... lol! This is a very well crafted work, with
drama, ingenuity, innovative and interesting use of orchestra
-- and most importantly, a sense of story and direction that
    keeps the listener engaged, throughout.

I might suggest a second movement to this. Perhaps you
could call it... Something a Little Darker...?

    Well done!

    My best,
