Freewrite no. 25 for Oboe, Marimba, Violin, and Cello

Occasionally, to keep my composition abilities adept, I do musical "freewrites". A musical freewrite is a short piece that I write in one sitting while trying to avoid backtracking. It's a sort of spiritual hybrid between composition and improvisation.

Here's one I did yesterday (using Finale 2007 GPO). It took me about two hours.

It is pretty amazing to me that you can sit down and compose something like this. I would have to have an instrument at hand to work out the harmonies at the very least. Very nice development and flow to this. It doesn't sound improvisational to me, the players all fit so well together.
Thanks for sharing some of your "practice" with us! John

Nice piece you've got here. Odd rhythms and blues-type scales are always a nice combination. The mix sounds a bit reverb-heavy, but not in a very disturbing way.

I hope you don't give up this practice.

I've got something of a fascination for these short, self-contained
pieces that basically focus on a single musical idea, say what
they have to say, and shut up... lol. Mine, I usually just call
preludes for lack of a better name -- though I like your "freewrite"
conception: "spiritual hybrid between composition and improvisation".

    Very well done, Luke!
