    Arrow Theme & Variations - a Collaboration

    Hi to all,

This is a collaboration project composed by Eugene and Yudit.

    Eugene:
“We got the idea of co-composing a work, which seemed like an interesting challenge and fun to do, and settled on the well tried ‘variations on a theme’ format.
The plan was that the theme would be short, and the variations could be in any style, for any instruments, and could be free in construction, not necessarily following the theme outline in every detail.
    I composed variations no. 1, 4, 5, 6 and 8. ”

    Yudit:
“This was definitely a challenging and fun project and I learned a lot from it!
    I composed variations no. 2, 3 and 7.”

    The variations are as followed:

Var. 1 – Homage a Schubert – Classical piano trio: Violin, Cello and Piano.
    Var. 2 – Caloroso – Authorized Steinway.
Var. 3 – Misterioso – GPO Pizzicato Strings and Chromatic Harp, JABB Vintage Piano and Mellow Guitar.
Var. 4 – Waltz for a Summer Afternoon - Authorized Steinway.
Var. 5 – Fanfare Processional – Horn quartet with Timpani.
    Var. 6 – Ragtime Moment – Pianoteq.
    Var. 7 – Scherzoso - Authorized Steinway.
Var. 8 – Charleston – JABB ensemble: 2 Muted Trumpets, Bass Trombone, Percussion, 2 Clarinets and Double Bass.

Yudit and Eugene, What a fun surprise you have left for us this morning!
You have started with an interesting theme, with a bit of chromaticism, and a bit of major/minor ambiguity. Each little variation is unique and fun to discover what you have come up with. This was a great project and you have really done it up right. I especially like the solo piano pieces, but the small ensembles are all a joy to hear as well. Thank you both, John

This is great! What a fun project to have taken on, and executed just wonderfully. I enjoyed each of the variations, and the character that the collaborative aspect brought to your joint project. Thanks for sharing this unique and very well done piece!

Re: Theme & Eight Variations - a Collaboration

I gotta be honest guys that variations on a theme usually makes me turn away. Some guys can get away with it and some guys just seem to let it go on and on and on. I remember one I heard not long ago by a long dead composer who did 18 variations and I was sick of the them after 3.

These were very well executed and short enough in each variation to ensure that no one will get sick of them.

    Nice work guys.
