Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2 WIP

I haven't gotten my score in the mail yet, but I couldn't wait to start this endeavor. I plan on doing a GPO Chicago Symphony Side-By-Side. It's much more difficult to do this than I anticipated. Of course for the most part this is a by ear transcription. Here's what I've got so far.

I tired to make it as seamless as possible.I did good with the first two, but the I can't seem to nail that last section by ear. Can't wait til my score comes. It took me nearly 30 minutes to pick out four piano notes in the fast section and I'm still not sure if they're right.

Well if this is done 'by ear' it' marvelous. Shostakovich is one of my favorites!!!

It will be interesting to see what changes occur when you get the score.

    Nice rendition.

This is quite impressive for being done "by ear."
Just out of curiousity, did you try looking for a midi of this and get a score that way?

    Ben,

Fabulous so far! I'm not a total Shostakovich nut, but I definitely am a fan of this piece. The finished product will be spectatcular if you continue on with the same result you have here.

One really small suggestion: the subito piano spots sounded a little too "fader-induced"; maybe some mod wheel adjustments with varying degrees of mod wheel values amongst the sections and/or instruments, with the volume drop not quite as drastic??? Just a minor thought.

This is going to be a wonderful product when finished... I'm looking forward to it!

It sounds like a real challenge. It's going to be great when it's finished.

Shostakovich was probably very manic and this piece has that signature up,up, feel to it.

    Hi!

This is one of my favourite concertos (along with Ravel Concerto in G)... It is quite lovely, very pasionate and extremely well made, I think!

I also think that you've captured the sound very well indeed! Especially since done by ear this is mighty impressive! I have to say that I get the impression that when you get the score you will change quite a few things, but still this is VERY impressive, and by no means I want to undermine your amazing work here! (plus it's a GREAT excersize! Imagine in a conservatory to tell them "dicte Shosty concert no. 2, 1st mvnt."!

I don't think I'd be able to do what you did!

And I certainly don't think I can point where there are missing notes, or things that MIGHT be wrong (in my head and my ears), it's just how I feel.

So there's not much else to say, until you do finish the work, which I'm REALLY REALLY looking forward to listening!

    Thanks for sharing

Thanks for the comments guys. In response to all at once, I greatly appreciate the comments. I also wish to say, yes it is quite a challenge. I do not wish to use a score, but I feel that finishing this project will be near impossible without one. So actually today I'm swinging by the UNF library to pick it up. So hopefully things go well. Thanks again for the nice remarks.

    Hi TubaJedi,

Shostakovich is one of those composers who seemed to move ever so naturally in the modern milieu, so there's much to be learned in your exercise. I think DPDan did a lot of this sort of thing by ear, and if his experience is anything to go by, it's definitely a good way to learn to use GPO in a most convincing manner, in addition to the added benefits of honing one's ear and transcription skills.

No one has yet noted this, but I see you're already switching between your rendering and the reference recording. I believe I hear your rendering at 0:00, 0:39, and 0:56 and the CSO @ 0:21, 0:46, and 1:07. Is this right? The GPO snare and strings are a dead giveaway, though the pianos sound surprisingly close! Your rendering is very good.

Please keep us posted of your future progress on this.

    Regards,
    Darwin
