I upgraded to Finale2009 and I simply love the ARIA player. It loads much faster, it is much simpler to use and it even looks better than the old KP. Unfortunately we will have to wait for the full GPO upgrade to use it in ARIA. In the mean time KP loads just fine in F2009.

Like most Finale updates, it's more evolutionary than revolutionary. Yes, the Aria player is there and does work with Human Playback. The older Garritan Libraries still work as well. They've included 100 sounds from Tapspace Virtual Drumline, Muti-page editing, and they tweaked the workflow somewhat to make it easier and more intuitive. Of course, it still also supports full VST and AU instruments.

My 2 cents is that it's worth the $99.

Cool. Don't quite understand the whole GPO / Aria matter but it's a go ahead at $99. I never took advantage of the upgrade to 8 so it's about time.
    Thanks again gents!

Unfortunately we will have to wait for the full GPO upgrade to use it in ARIA.
However, one can still use existing GPO, yes?

Keith's comment is well-put; this upgrade is "incremental" but a couple of the increments are excellent

But as I work more with it, I am coming to like the drag-application of expression and the dropping of the difference between "Note Expressions" and "Measure Expressions."

I am a lover of FinaleScript, and that has been REALLY given a great update...Props to MM for seeing the value of FS and giving it the attention it deserved

Of course, ARIA is a breeze and a delight .

Since 2004, Finale has REALLY come a loooonnnngggg way. Improvements have been major since Finale 2005!!

Re: Who has upgraded to Finale 9?

I have used Finale off and on since Version 1.xx. It is
a good manuscript program, but, in my opinion leaves a
lot to be desired for playback. Don't misunderstand me,
though, Finale HAS come a long way and I am surprised
at the output by some of our best composers, but I have
had two issues with Finale 2009:

    1. There is no REVERB (Ambience) for Intel Macs in case you are using
a Mac. No problem with G4/5 or PC machines. If you want to apply
reverb to your composition playback, you will need to transfer the Finale
file to a DAW or perform some other link to a reverb unit (Mac Intel).

    2. I had a problem loading the Garritan Authorized Steinway on my Mac
as it does not show in the "setup wizard." Also, when I did get it loaded,
it became muddled (notes bunching up and some not playing) when I
played the instrument. PMd David Plogue (ARIA creator) and he said I
needed a "patch" which he sent to me. Installed the "patch" and the
Steinway still didn't show in the setup wizard. He then stated that the
GPO AU instruments were upgraded, but the Steinway hadn't been yet, so
he sent me a "SteinwayAU.component" file to replace the default file of the
same name. After installing this file, I could only play back the Steinway
very successfully on the default VELOCITY CURVE which is the straight-line
setting. The other two settings, convex and concave are still a muddled-up
    playing experience.

Bear in mind that the Steinway can be loaded as a VST instrument if you
are using a PC. I use two computers because I am a Digital Performer user
and the PC hosts my samples and the Mac hosts my reverb and DAW. But,
I have the Steinway application on my Mac and the 42 GB load of samples
    on a Mac EXTERNAL HD.

I'm using a Mac Pro 2.66 Ghz with 4 GB of RAM and the best audio interface
on the market (RME Digiface) and had no trouble playing the Steinway in Digital Performer before purchasing Finale 2009. Now, the new component file, since it is universal, only permits me to play back in the default velocity curve setting. David will take of this (no biggie) when he comes back from vacation.

So, I think Finale 2009 is a good program, but for me, it hasn't been that great yet. I use it mainly for a "scratchpad," then transfer the MIDI to Digital Performer for editing.

Rhap points out a very difficult problem in the software business- adding new technology without breaking older technology. I'm absolutely convinced that David V. (Plogue) will get Aria (both the player built-in plus the Steinway) working perfectly. He always has in the past.

As for playback, I really think that Finale has improved by orders of magnitude over very old versions due to Robert Piechaud's "Human Playback." It really does a very good job. As far as I know, the only way to do better is to export your MIDI to your DAW and hand tweak the way DPDAN and others do.

Re: Who has upgraded to Finale 9?

    Hello Styxx,

I've taken the plunge and have Finale 09 as I speak.

I like it and feel that, for me anyway, the upgrade was worth it.

Regarding playback, I do all my playback tweaking outside of Finale (Sonar Producer 7) so I can't comment too much on this feature although I have taken a peak at ARIA and it looks great.
