Nikolai Medtner on the Garritan Auth. Steinway

I have just installed the Garritan authorized Steinway and decided to try it right away (and I have to say I'm really pleased with it so far)!

I picked up a piano-piece by Nikolai Medtner (a Russian composer) and played it from

the midi-keyboard and into my sequencer (energyXT). I then did a tiny bit of «CC-polishing» afterwards.

I used the «classical» perspective from the «professional» version of the Steinway.

    Hope you enjoy it!

    Halvor:

Enjoyed it very much. You did a really great job of
plaing this piece. I can tell you also like the new Steinway.

A great performance of a great piece with an awesome new
software instrument: The Garritan Authorized Steinway.

    THE BEST.

    Excellent job on this, Halvor!

Medtner, a friend and contemporary of Rachmaninoff, was a great
admirer of Scriabin, and both influences are evident.

This is another composer whom we hear too rarely. I hope you
will bring us more from Medtner!

    All my best,

Thanks for the kind words, Jack! The Steinway is probably the first sampled Steinway-piano that doesn't have a somewhat plonky sound.

    Lovely piece and great playing!

Isn't the Steinway a wonderful instrument??

Thanks for the listen and the kind words, David. It is certainly true that Medtner is quite similar to both Scriabin and Rachmaninov in style, after all they lived approximately at the same time. But I still feel Medtner is a bit more melancholic and dreamy in the overall expression than Rachmaninov. Even the most virtuous of Medtners pieces have perhaps less of the "audience fraternity" and showpiece-character you sometimes hear in the music by Rachmaninov. Even if the language are roughly the same i feel Medtner is more of a "Brahms" and Rachmaninov more perhaps more of a "Liszt".

Medtner was certainly a very good friend of Rachmaninov and the latter often praised his music, but still Medtner never enjoyed the same success as his friend.

His music has sometimes been described as heavy and difficult to grasp, but I have never understood that....

Thanks a lot, DelCarry. I'm very pleased to hear you liked my interpretation of Medtner's Fairy Tale!

The rendering may still not be the best, however... I used quite a lot of sustain resonance, but that also seemed to generate a lot of mechanical noise as well. Every time I used the damper pedal you can hear the mechanics interacting (a bit too loud) with the piano-strings.

Thanks for commenting! Yes, those who isn't acquainted with the piano-music of Medtner have a lot to look forward to!

P.S: I'm looking forward to your next piano-piece..
