    Unhappy Pardon me--My Bad

I need to be circumspect in this post - I'm here to apologize for posting something earlier which had to be removed by the admins.

I was asking for information on a certain Internet sub-culture through which people have access to large files of most any sort. In the post, I explained how I stumbled across this phenomenon for the first time through a Google search. I also described my experience trying to use the services of this "sub-culture" and how it ended up as a dead end.

Now it's gotten back to me that people in chat apparently were saying that I'd posted instructions about how to get pirated music software---?!?!---Maybe that was just a gross simplification, and not an accurate report of what the chat was really about - But that's how I heard it. And that is Not at all an accurate description of what my deleted post was about.

I can be Such an innocent Dumbo, and I guess this is one of those cases. I didn't understand exactly what it was I'd stumbled on to through Google, I figured some techno types here would have more info--so I put up the post asking for information.

OH well---I meant well. It was a strange adventure--And for the record, I.m back where I started. This certain "underground Internet sub-culture" did Not yield me anything usable. If I Had gotten what I wanted from this "service," I was only going to use it if there was some way of sending payment.

---Seems like I've done little more than stumble on the various posts I've put up since my Birthday (Oct 9). Maybe I'm just rusty and out of practice.

Sorry folks, I vow to do better!

    Re: Pardon me--My Bad

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it.

The good news is that in the end, even though the files opened up and were functioning, it wasn't possible to register the results. I thought I was going to be directed to a page for making payment, but just came to a dead end when the serial # of the software in question was bogus.

Naive me--I had no idea what I posted would be taken as "instructions." And even if someone took them that way, they won't get benefit from this "service." The software is expiring and you can't register it.

    Thanks again.

You know, Randy, anyone can have things like that happen - you are not alone.

    True story.
A couple of years before I retired from teaching I was in the library at the school talking with the librarian, a sweet, lovely person who was also quite naive in the realm of internet acronyms. She had an 8th grade class coming in later during the day to do some internet research on the stock exchange and, as was her usual method, decided to find some good sites for the students to peruse. So, into her Google search page she typed what she thought was the acronym for the New York Stock Exchange. But, instead of typing in NYSE, She typed in NYSEX. You can guess the rest of the story. Almost immediately her computer was flooded with all kinds of porn sites including some "rings" that she couldn't exit. She finally had to shut her computer down and reboot. Needless to say, her face was quite red and we, being the good friends that we were, have never let her forget it to this day!

I didn't see the posts you made - I've been busy away from the forum for awhile but this thread caught my eye. I'm sure no one thinks badly of you here as you are one of our treasures on the forum.

    Hello Randy,

I hope you are keeping well.

I think most of our members know you well enough so I really wouldn't worry. Your unintended experience probably raised a smile for most of us rather than causing any upset and, I think, many of us have humorous stories to relate on inadvertent, unplanned and unexpected internet happenings.

    From me as well Randy:

there's absolutely no need to be sorry in any way really! You informed of something rather than giving instructions of any kind! I, myself, have posted (more than a year ago), a screen capture of the same thing pretty much (in the pirate thread I believe, which still is around somewhere in the first pages).

The removal was probably for the shake of "being safe", rather than anything else.

I'm sure there's nothing to worry about and we/I all know what a valuable member of this community you are.

Haha, the internet can be a crazy place sometime. Not sure why the thread was deleted though, since most people with the intent of pirating something would know about the topic of discussion, anyway. Instructions hardly. It's very widespread and very available, unfortunately.

Believe it or not - it does happen. Not too long ago I came across a guy on the NI forum, who gave a very detailed description on how to crack copy protected Kontakt/Kompakt Player libraries. I told him what I meant about him and his "helpful" post, called the admin's attention to it and it was soon removed. Shortly afterwards the yahoo sent me an e-mail, where he whined about it and tried to justify his action.

Knowing Randy as a very decent and helpful guy, I am sure he would never post anything like that, though.

    Re: Pardon me--My Bad

Great thread - I really appreciate everyone's moral support on this goofy episode.

It's funny how I can be pretty hip on using programs I learn, but when it gets down to the nuts and bolts of computers and of knowing the ins and outs of the Internet - I'm not so hot. I have plenty on my hands just using the programs I use, I don't know how some folks figure so much more out. Well, I've never been terribly techno oriented. I'm a mixed bag of hipness on some things, under-informed on others. That causes me to step into some cyber quicksand once in awhile!

    Thanks again all. Carry on!

    Re: Pardon me--My Bad

I used to answer on Yahoo! Answers. I gave 13,000 answers and had almost 500 fans watching my account for various questions and replies. I had been with them from the very beginning December of 2003. I posted an answer that had to do with context regarding the Bible and how people can take any two scripture and make it say what it is not meant to say. I made an example by using two passages, Judas went out and hung himself and go ye and do likewise. The one asking the question then reported me as saying that he should go and hang himself and my account was deleted. So much for 4 years worth of my free time and in-depth knowledge. So to Randy I say, pardoned and forgotten. - Schneb
