    If Music Was a Sport

Here's an interesting premise in a blog by Andrew Dubber: What if Music was Sport?

A few examples of how things would be different:

    • Schools would have plenty of equipment and kids would have places to play and practice
    • People who didn't do any music at all would be considered a bit lazy by their peers
    • Professional musicians wouldn't get asked by their parents when they were going to get a real job
    • Most people would play music and almost none of them would expect money for it
    • Audiences would bet on the outcome of concerts
    • Kids would dream of one day representing their country in Hip Hop
    • In American teen films, trombonists would beat up the kid who got picked last for the orchestra

I just had a picture of three large guys leaping up from their couch, potato chips flying everywhere, yelling "B FLAT!!! Oh, come ON!"

If music was a sport, and musical performance was rated like a batting average, and even if that batting average was very, very high (0.300+), only one note in three would be correct.

If music were a sport?!!? Clearly this guy hasn't been introduced to the world of British Brass Banding. Not only is there a bona fide league table (and I'd know, because my boss is principle trombone for the band that just went top - try shutting him up) but contests are won and lost for displays of athleticism rather than musicianship. For instance, if a test piece is famous for having a very long, very high note in the sop solo, audiences will actually get out stopwatches to compare bands - most won't be able to comment on the more general musicality of the performance.

"I bet the tuba player blows the ending!"

"Nah, I think they're gonna skip the DS and go straight for the coda."

Would there be competitive bouts? Maybe Alfred Brendel vs. The Berlin Phil. Opponents could big it up on TV for weeks beforehand, and try to psych each other out (Dude, your Bb is so far out it's practically an A#).

What would be the musical equivalent of Dressage?

I could not begin to guess, as I have not any idea of what Dressage means.

    Would someone enlighten me?

It's the collective name for all the horse events that are about control - i.e. not the racing. The events where horses have to do silly things like trotting sideways, lifting their knees up, skip, count to ten, dance jigs etc.

    The Negative Side...

    • Parents of child musicians would yell at the conductor
    • Parents would be telling kids to get off violin and go play football
    • Operas would have people dressing up like vikings
    • Fans would throw things at the musicians
    • Riots would entail over a bad concert arrangement
    • Scalpers of orchestral events
    • Mandatory drug testing before playing The Rach 3 Candenza
    • Scantily clad cheerleaders between sonatas
    • Fans would just not shut up during recitals
    • Dude with rainbow wig behind the timpani would display John 3:16

Major networks would be bidding megabicks for the television rights to concerts in major venues.

Free Agent concertmeisters would sign lucrative contracts.

Nike and Reebok would compete for the orchestra tuxedo market.
