Maybe I'm not reading the same posts as you but I haven't come across too many that dislike Ivory!

I'll hold on to my Steinway with a protective clutch---maybe it's a freak copy which somehow turned out perfectly!

I'm curious if you were ever able to reproduce this particular anomaly? Just for kicks I tried it on a system that was in a music store and sure enough... "tick... CLACK". They were quite surprised to hear that as well! The more I listen to it is sounds like a yardstick falling over or a conductor's baton being struck.

Anyhoo, the reason I'm even posting this is because I had actually forgotten all about this (haven't been playing GAS lately) and yesterday I fired it up again for the first time in a long while and was playing away when out of nowhere came that "CLACK" and I had to smile!

Cool Re: The PROPER Way To Sell?

I agree. My absolute favorite feature of the Garritan Steinway is the Live-To-WAV feature. It's easy to use and perfect for capturing those moments of pure inspiration without having to wait for a DAW to start up.

It is with this that I still wait for the Garritan update (and continue to work with Ivory)...

Re: The PROPER Way To Sell?

after sharing info with a member at EW for the pianos hes owned Ivory for sometime
quote "Until EW, Ivory was the closest piano you could get out of the box.
The interface worked well, and they finally came out with a Standalone.

The EW pianos are Rich, warm, smooth and with alot of velocities for delicate playing as well as harder playing."

    just passing this by you

Re: The PROPER Way To Sell?

I had a very close eye on the EW pianos at the same time Garritan was getting ready for release...

I ended up with Garritan because it was dedicated to the Steinway (which is the only piano I play). The EW library sounds incredible - all of EW stuff is amazing.

I would like to hear a demo of the Ivory Steinway next to the EW Steinway (a la propianist)!! I still don't have a single gripe about Ivory (with the exception of their lack of a "live-to-wav" feature). EW have this?

    Thanks!

Re: The PROPER Way To Sell?

I wish Synthogy would start selling all its pianos individually. I am probably going to get Italian Grand to have something different from Garritan Steinway Standard, but I'd also like to get their Yamaha piano samples. If I had those three, I think I'd be set.

Re: The PROPER Way To Sell?

    Hi Curt,

I've been a very happy Ivory owner for about 18 months now, but I've been eyeing the Garritan Steinway for some time (I missed it on the pre-release go-round sale last year, but I've been hoping for another go-round this year.... )

Since you say you now prefer the Ivory Steinway, I'm curious if your discriminating ear has had any trouble with the Bb right below middle C? This one note has always just annoyed me, because it sounds so completely different to me than the surrounding notes - has kind of a cowbell quality to me. I even find myself avoiding pieces that cross this note, and I cannot play this note in any setting without noticing. I understand each note is different which is part of the character of the instrument, but this particular sample has always seemed out of bounds to me, and is part of why I hope to make the switch to gasp - the opposite switch that you made.

Sorry to hear about your experience with the Garritan Steinway. I'm still hoping to get it, based on the many positive experiences I've heard, and the excellent quality of the other Garritan libs.

Re: The PROPER Way To Sell?

This is interesting! I don't hear an annoying quality on the Bb you referenced. I've provided a link below to an audio clip of me playing a little test for you using the 'Audience' perspective. I favor the Bb below middle C in this sample so you can get a good listen of how it sounds on my system. I also play the middle C and the Ab surrounding the Bb and then tinker around with a little melody that features a few different velocities of the Bb.

I don't hear a "cowbell" like quality nor do I hear any obvious difference in tonality to the surrounding notes.

    Anyone else hear it?

I wish the same thing of EW! I use only the Steinway library in Ivory and I'd use only the Steinway in EW. $450 is a lot to pay for a library of which I would use only 25%.
