Lightbulb OT: X-rays from adhesive tape

Here's something you don't see everyday. Researchers at UCLA discovered that simply peeling adhesive tape generates a substantial amount of x-rays. The catch: you have to peel the tape in a vacuum (otherwise, air molecules quench the reaction). See the video posted at Nature.com.

    Enjoy,

    Grant

Thank God for our atmosphere. Otherwise we would have to wear lead-lined gloves to use Scotch tape. :O

That's amazing, Grant. Thanks for sharing the news. I vote for them to try a roll of electrical tape.

thats pretty amazing. tho the bit where he says 'this could be applied in 3rd world countries where electricity is hard to come by' (or something like that) is a bit unbelievable.... If they cant get electricity, how are they going to sustain a vacuum in which to generate useful xrays?!?

This is likely to generate much interest - maybe it can be made a Sticky Thread?

I imagine something pumped by hand: a hand pump for vacuum, and a crank to turn the tape roll. You could probably make a functional x-ray camera for tens of dollars instead of thousands.

There are many Christian missions and charity organizations which set up medical facilities (and dental) in remote countries, using generators and solar power. The power is sometimes just enough for a light or some instrument, but not both. If it can run on low power, it seemes like it is probably just what they have been needing.
