    Rachmaninov - My new Steinway

Some time ago I posted a brief rendering of the second movement of Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto. I've just received my copy of the Steinway (Standard), thanks to my sweet wife who bought it as a 9th wedding anniversary present for me.

I've redone the original track using the new Steinway, also including a couple of tweaks suggested by forum members.

I know it's still got a couple of rough edges and misplaced notes, but I was so excited to get my Steinway that I had to share it!

    Here it is: http://www.box.net/shared/9tlth4z5gz

Is GAS great, or what?! So's my wife for getting it for me.

I love this movement. Especially since the clarinet has such a prominent part. (I am a clarinetist)
Very beautifully orchestrated Owen. Did you play the piano part in real time. It sounds very personal and well... live. Thank your wife again for such a wonderful present and the ability to share it with the community!

    As DPDAN said: gorgeous.

I noticed some hiss, made by the pedals. Maybe you can shift them to the left a bit. I experienced the same and with some patience and dedication I got rid of them all (almost all). Just by shifting them or at the exact time under the note (let's say the note begins at 21.000.260, then you pedal must begin at exact that time). Sometimes this doesn;t help, so you can shift them tick by tick to the left, to eliminate them.

Hope this helps, for the rest, you made it work and your idea of filling in the instruments in the piano solo is really great, smooth attacking.... etc. You know what you've done to get it. There is a gap between the repeating motiv/theme, on my Cd there isn't any, at least not that long (performed by the Concertgebouw Orchestra with Askenazy).

I really appreciate such praise from a master such as you. Yes, you are correct, it's the alto solo flute V. I tried other samples, but they were either too bare (such as solo flute NV) or had too much presence for this piece (solo flute V). Alto flute was the only one I could get to sound like it fitted.

I passed your message on to my wife. Appreciate it.

Yes, I played all the parts real time. That also accounts for the piano part being considerably less than perfect!

    Many thanks for you comment.
