    Suite for Strings (Sirulnikoff)

    Hi All,

This is something I wrote many, many years ago. I think in some ways it still stands up fairly well, although I'm sure in certain spots it could be improved. I had posted the 2nd movement previously, but here are all three movements.

    1. Moderato

    2. Adagio Sostenuto

    3. Allegro

    I hope you like it.

    Jack:

Some really good compositional ideas here. The beginning
is really chock-full of modulations and gets the listener's
    attention right away.

It's good to revisit scores that were composed a while ago.
They get new treatment and are such a joy to work with
    once again.

    Enjoyed your suite, Jack.

I love the way the 3rd movement starts up. The third is easily my favorite of the 3.

I also go back and listen to my previous works and just want to rerender them, but I know the time involved and always decide to compose new stuff instead. Of course a lot of my older works aren't worth spendind any time with at all, (that goes for some of the new as well).

    Nice piece for strings.

    Hi Jack,

there is so much good material in all three parts, that it is just a waste not to look a second time at some phrases and modulations. Make some changes to get the phrasing better. I liked the third the most. It is also a pity that (maybe due to the MP3 conversion) the sound quality is rather poor. Lift it to a higher level, it is worth it. I see that you composed that in 1956. Then I was 12 years old.... and busy with other musical things. How rich are you, that you could make this half a century ago?!?!?!

    Hi Jack and Ron,

Thanks for listening, and for your kind comments.

I guess one of the reasons for recycling old pieces is that they may kickstart me into producing something new. Reworking old material may be a way into that.

Also, as in the case of pieces which were never performed, it gives me a chance to actually hear what I produced so many years ago.

    Best Regards,

    Jack

    They were all very good.

I liked the 2nd and third the best.

    Thanks, Phil.

Personally, I think the 2nd hangs together the best.

    Hi Jack,

Your piece(s) reminds me of a bit older piece, although it's not what one could call "fully tonal". The writing is very clever and "chicky" if I may say so. I find that all 3 movements are very coherent and excellent examples of awesome string writing!

It is very nice, indeed, as the other Jack says, to revisit older scores.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for your comments, Nikolas.

I'm not sure what 'chicky' is, but thanks anyhow.

    Best Regards,

    Jack

I'm pleased to hear all three movements of this
    together, Jack -- a gorgeous suite, I must say;
strong writing for strings, with compliments to
both the color work and, most especially, the rich
    harmonic language.

Very well done, with solid compositional thinking
throughout. I'd love to hear this live!

    My best,

    David
