    Word Of The Year: BAILOUT

    Word Of The Year

Merriam-Webster announced their Word of the Year:

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year 2008. The word is...

    bailout

The Word of the Year is based on the number of online lookup requests.

Bailout means: 1) a rescue from financial difficulties. 2) providing of government financial aid to a failing company, city, etc.

The runners up words were: vet, socialism, maverick, bipartisan, trepidation, precipice, rogue, misogyny, and turmoil.

It's kind of like a diary of 2008. Hypermiling (optimizing auto fuel economy) was the Oxford Word of the Year.

I'm shocked that "Change" isn't one of them.
