Beauty and the Beast from 'Mother Goose' (Ravel)

    Hi All,

i'm down in Florida getting away from the cold and snow. I'm trying to operate on wireless, and having quite a few problems, but I managed to get this piece on. I hope you enjoy it.

A few wrong notes in the opening section.
There's a strange effect, for example, when the 2 clarinets play, where one of the 2 parts gets lost on certain notes, and it modifies the melodic line.

It's a tiny bit too dry reverb-wise for me.

Even played at the piano, there's a lot more pedal involved (I'm performing this in concert next May, for the 1st time in nearly 25 years). The dryness takes away from the effect. It makes it sound a bit "synthy".

    Thanks for your comments.

I don't have the score with me, but I'll check it out when I get back.

I used the 'Recording Studio' reverb preset from KP2, and I think it does sound a bit thin - part of it may be due to the orchestration, but it's hard for me to tell, because I only have a pair of cheap headphones with me.

    Regards,

Very nice job on this, Jack -- but your affinity for
Ravel always serves you so beautifully... you seem
to understand his work very clearly.

On the reverb, don't be afraid to lay it on a little
heavy with this. The tempi are relatively slow,
with little very fast material -- and generally, work
like that will happily take more reverb. And -- well,
    this is Ravel!

    All the best,

    David

    David and John,

Thanks for listening, and for your comments.

I'm pleased to be missing some of the weather up north right now, but I'll be heading back January 13, so I'm sure I'll still catch some winter.

    Happy Holidays to all.

    Regards,

    Jack

I enjoyed it as is but you do need some verb with at least the current virtual instruments to give them dimension.

Have fun in the sun. If I had known what the weather was going to be like here right now I would also be down south. My sister-in-law fell on the ice and fractured her leg in a couple of places.

    Nice work.

    Hi Phil,

There seems to be concensus (sp ?) about the reverb. I'll look into it once I can work on to it properly.

Sorry to hear about your sister-in-law. The weather here has been lovely. I know the west coast has been hit pretty hard this year. After last winter (both the weather, and I had a problem with my leg (hematoma)), I decided to try to get away for at least part of the winter. I brought my laptop, and am trying to run it using wireless, but am having many problems with pop-ups, hanging, etc.

Anyhow, thanks for listening and for your comments.

    Best Regards,

    Jack

    Jack,

Such a great piece - will you do the other movements? The Enchanted GArden is my favorite...

I thought the middle section worked better; I suspect it is the reverb. The instruments sounded a little too close. The idea of having more pedal - on the piano - I suppose translates into more space/reverb. Still, it was great that you did this. It's always nice to be reminded of wonderful, but at-times-neglected works.

    Enjoy the sun!

    Hi Ron,

    Thanks for dropping by.

I actually have done all five movements, but I want to revisit them when I get home. I used the same reverb on all of them, so maybe I'll experiment with them a bit before posting.

    Regards,

    Jack
