Open Question: cc1 = 0, lowest audible vs silence?

    An open question to all:

Would you prefer the lowest modwheel setting (cc1 = 0) to be the lowest audible volume or silence?

What are your thoughts on the pros and cons of either approach?

It should be silence so you can do a complete fade out.

That's one of my wishes, for CC1=0 to be complete silence.

That is easy to do in Kontakt, just add a portion of midi automation going from CC1 to the volume slider.

Note that you can change the range of the fader contribution, I often set it from 30% to 85 %.

Great advice from Hannes, as per usual.

For me it doesn't matter the the lowest value isn't absolute silence, because I never work only with MIDI. I always work with MIDI and Audio tracks in combination. After as much MIDI editing as I can muster, there's a whole second part of the project which takes just as long, or longer, and that's working with the audio tracks where there's much more control over balance and other subtle touches. That's where I can easily take tracks out to complete silence when needed.

Since I like to work with virtual instruments, that resemble physical instruments as closely as possible, my answer to your question is "lowest audible volume". You can't fade a physical instrument to complete silence. You can fade it to almost inaudible and then let instrument resonance (~release sample)/room acoustics (~reverb tail) take care of the rest. And that's what I do with VIs to get as natural a decay as possible.
