    Thumbs up Microsoft Songsmith

Today in the chat Gary mentioned Microsoft Songsmith, linked to on http://www.garritan.com

Basically, the program provides a drum beat for you to sing along to (or play a solo instrument to). Then when you're done, it goes through and adds stylish chordal accompaniment.

Downloading the demo took forever, but I finally got it and have been playing around with it and I must say...

HOLY COW! This is the funnest thing ever!! I must say, it seems to work extremely well, I am extremely impressed.

I'll be playing with it all night now...

    So go try it.

Yea I checked the ad for it from youtube. It's a really really good idea and seemed to work well. =) But it was by research, does it mean it'll come for sale or is it just a research project that may never see the light?

So Microsoft Songsmith incorporates technology licensed from PG Music (Band-In-A-Box) and Garritan.

Sounds like a fascinating collaboration and an opportunity for this technology to get out to a much wider audience.

Gary, can you make a post about what went into the creation of this product?

What else might you be doing with PG Music?

I watched a couple of songsmith examples on Youtube. After picking myself up off the floor, having had a good laugh for several minutes, I watched a vid of putting a video to the song. ROFL!!!! Are microsoft serious with this?!

    Re: Microsoft Songsmith

Microsoft is serious and Songsmith is a cool music app. It certainly is new and different. It is aiming at a much broader market to bring music making to many. Although Songsmith will be used by many novices, it could also have some uses for the more serious musician. The initial videos probably don't do it justice but in the days and weeks ahead there will probably be many demos and videos that show Songsmith's potential.

    I must have this!

Imagine! Never again the toil of writing down all those notes...

One problem, though. When I sing, I sound like a basso goat
with a sinus infection, being beaten by an angered mob.

    Will Songsmith work for me...?

    Best,

    David,

Of course it will work for you.

You will sound likea basso goat with a sinus infection, being beaten by an angered mob - but with accompaniment! The world needs to hear that
