Beautiful simplicity David. I'd love to see the score, but I think again you've masterfully made the most out of a small amount of material. I like how the harmonic language weaves back and forth between more traditional harmonies and progressions and what sound like poly-tonalities. Great work as always! Thanks for sharing.

Good heavens, this is beautiful. Wonderful chords you are using. Lots of m7+9's and more of this kind - hoping hearing it right. (minor chords are wonderful stuff aren't they!). In fact it is too short, I must play it again.

Thumbs up Re: DAMAGED BEAUTY - Violin & String Orchestra (Sosnowski)

    Dear David,

master writing with some really nice shapes here. I remember Claus Ogerman and Jeremy Lubbock by listening. Very nice!! I like very much these broad feligran string textures with such very nice harmonies in it. What library is this? Is there a pdf score available?

    Really nice !

    All my best.

I think the title fits this piece perfectly.

    Just wonderful string work here.

The Strad does just by it's nature stick out of the mix a little but I think it still works fine. You have to use what you have at hand.

Beautiful and I also feel a certain sadness here.

    It all flows so naturally.

What a treat to hear another piece by you so soon.

Like celestial white, this surely contains all the spectrum of emotional colours!

    Hello Nikolas,

You seem to be lately always first to listen, my
    friend -- thank you!

Ah. Sorry about that. Same thing happens to me,
    though. I decide affirmatively to go do some writing;
stop by the Listening Room just to see what's going
    on, and...

The only 'objection' I would have, you know how I am, would be that I think the violin is a little bit too loud. It comes off as an 'extra' in the orchestra and not part of the group, even as a soloist...
I agree, Nikolas. This is a case of best compromise.
I tried various positions, re-balanced this more times
than I can count, and pulled every trick I know with
room and sound treatment. I must have spent twenty
hours fiddling with this, trying to get it "just right" --
but this is as good as my humble skills could get it.

In real performance, one hopes the solo violin would
succeed with less conspicuousness, blending better
    with the backing strings.

BTW, the rendering of the strad (it is the strad, right?), is very very very very good! And your harmonic language. OH MY GOD!
Thanks for the good word, Nikolas. Given your own
work, I thought perhaps you, of all, would particularly
    like the language.

(I also know you'll upload the score sooner or later: just make it sooner rather than later! )
The score has since been posted, of course, Nikolas...
    awaiting your astute eye!

    A big Fan:

    Nikolas

EDIT: And I actually posted this before the e-mail notification! Take THAT automatic machines! Human love and care for brilliance is stronger than thy!
ROFL! Well taken, Nikolas; and thank you for listening!

    My best,

    Hello, David

The lush poignancy of your "Damaged Beauty" easily wove its special spell over me.

An enriching experience to hear this, and one I am going to repeat in the evening when your piece's questioning, hurt but hopeful tone should go very nicely with the quieter night time hours.

Thank you once again for sharing your creations here on the Forum!

This is a beautiful composition David, with an haunting quality that builds from the opening bars.

It's hard to put into words but for me, this work invites visual and interactive participation. I want to be part of it - which is an odd sort of way of saying that a live soloist pouring everything he or she has into this would add even more to my appreciation of it. But that would be a bonus. This GPO recording is a treat as it stands and is one of my favourites from your growing collection of works.

    Kind regards,

    Graham

Whew! An emotional trip for me because of your harmonic language, as well as your melodic sense. I stand in wonderment and awe!

Re: DAMAGED BEAUTY - Violin & String Orchestra (Sosnowski)

    David,

It's hard to know which to congratulate first - your skill at composing, or your skill at manipulating the Strad: both gave us a very broad range of sound, emotion, and expressive texture. The exploiting of the lushness of the string orchestra against the solo violin is brilliant - similar, yet so very different in their sounds. I confess that I am baffled by the "Damaged" appellation; "beauty" seems to suffice.

While all your music is so worthy, I feel this piece especially deserves live performances; would that we had it in our power to make it so. Until then, we will make do with this, which is a very satisfying journey. Thanks for that, several times over.

    All the best,
