    Web sites/hosting

I have never had my own website and know nothing about it. I do know that sites like soundclick/boxnet and all of the rest will host my music, but it is always under their limitations.

So I am considering finding a place to host my music, but have no idea where to go next. There seems to bo a ton of hosts out there which means that there is a good chance of being ripped off as well.

What site are you using and how much do you pay for what services?

    Thanks
    Ron

Hi Ron, How does free sound? I saw where Jonny Lost was thinking about using his page at the new Garritan site as his webpage. You can have all your mp3's, photos, videos, etc. on your page, and I saw there were some add-ons available to "pimp your page" so you should be able to design it to some extent. Maybe Jonny could weigh in on this? John

I think that the only ones that can view the new site are members of the site. I tried to copy my site address and when I clicked on it it sent me straight to the sign on page.

I would use it if it could be accessed without having to join. I know that when I go to sites that say I have to join before I can listen to a piece of music, I just leave the place.

On a different note...Are my eyes failing me or was that a nice little smallmouth in one of your pics? Pound for pound, they are the best fighting fish around. The other one I assume was a pike? I do love to fish!

Hi Ron, Well maybe Tony can help out with that. Yes, that was indeed a nice smallmouth. I have made a trip up to Northern Ontario annually for a number of years. In 2008 I lost my fishing partner and father-in-law so I don't know when I will make it back again. We had some fine fishing trips there. John

    Hey Ron,

I'm sure others will have loads of good recommendations. My server is hosted by a friend of a friend, but the domain is from www.godaddy.com.

When you have a website, you have a place to host the files but then you can also get yourself a .com (or .net, etc) domain which basically is just a referral to the place where your files are located, to give yourself a better address.

Domain registration is pretty cheap now, as little as few bucks for a whole year. This will cover your domain but as for the hosting, www.godaddy.com also provide some pretty good deals. I know several people using godaddy and they seem to have no problems. Cheap too.

    Re: Web sites/hosting

I can only offer a little advice because I do not currently have a website of my own, but I can tell you of a place that I'm considering. My uncle recommended me to http://www.ixwebhosting.com. For around $4 a month it offers unlimited space, unlimited bandwidth (both of these come with every plan, basic or pro), and a free domain name (you get more for the more advanced plans). You can run one website off the basic plan, which is just fine for hosting music and a professional public profile.

From what my uncle tells me, they have very little downtime and excellent customer support as well. He's had a very pleasant experience with getting solutions for the few problems that he's had.

There are many resources out there, so I'll let people who are more knowledgeable than me respond and give you some more options. I'd certainly like to hear if there is anything better than what I've mentioned, and if there are any flaws with it that I'm not noticing.

    Hope this helps!

That is the kind of info I am looking for. I saw godaddy listed in one of my searches, but I need to know from people I can trust (eg:members here) that the site itself is trustworthy.

Still am looking for more suggestions

    Thank you

Prices have gone up recently, perhaps due to the economy, but here's what I use:

http://www.omnis.com to buy domain names, $8.95 a year

http://www.webhostingbuzz.com for hosting, $83.40 a year (I pay less since I signed up years ago)

Hosting wise, they offer 400 GB of space, more than enough for me, and 5 TB of bandwidth, also more than enough for me, even while hosting multiple domains. Although you might not necessarily want to pay for more than you need.

I'm not sure how much they offer in terms of website building, as I've always done that by myself. But I've been pleased with them.

Wow, at first glance, that looks like a great deal!
