Really fast question about score reading

Surprisingly, I hadn't encountered this before. When Cello and Contrabass are written on the same staff for some (but not all) of a composition, do they play in the same octave or continue to sound an octave apart?

Many thanks to anyone who can answer this.

Some scores do this to save space or eliminate simple "redundancy" in the lowest string parts. The transposition of the double bass remains constant. So, written at the same pitch on the same staff, cello and bass sound in octaves.

Thanks DarwinKopp. But now let's make it a bit more confusing because, after starting this topic, I noticed that the bass and cello parts, when occupying the same staff, sometimes share the same note and other times appear to be playing divisi.

So is that a bass and a cello playing two octaves apart? Basses and cellos both playing divisi in octaves and thus filling three octaves between the two of them? Something even stranger?

    Looking forward to the answer.

That is specifically the cellos playing octaves. You can tell because of the whole rests at the bottom of the staff indicating the basses are tacet.

Ahh, hadn't paid attention to that, I thought it was just a smudged accent.

    Thanks again, this really helps!
