Henry Purcell - Old One Hundredth with GPO brass

    Henry Purcell composed a magnificant voluntary for organ in fugue form on the well known Doxology, Old Hundredth. Here I have set it for brass quintet using Finale 2008 and the GPO brass;

    2 Trumpets
    1 F Horn
    1 Tenor Trombone
    1 Tuba

Hi Gary, This works great with the brass! I recognized this right away coming from a Protestant childhood. This material has a lot of miles on it, but you have made a good arrangement here! Thanks for sharing, John

Hi, Gary - Like John, I had instant memories of childhood, singing the Doxology in the Lutheran Church I grew up in, "Praise God from whom all blessings flow..." But the Purcell arrangement isn't QUite what our church organist was up to playing.

This sounds really stirring, very well done. Did you have to do a lot of adaptation of the arrangement, or is this pretty much as Purcell penned it?

Thanks for the memories, and the solid piece of music.

Excellent realisation, Gary. There are times where it almost sounds like an organ!

    John,

Yes it is a wonderful work to begin with and then adding the brass brought it up yet another level. Glad you enjoyed it.

    Randy,

Thanks for your kind comments. It is indeed a stirring work to being with, the well know Doxology. It transcribed this directly from Purcells organ music. Apart from the octave placement of the trumpets on occasion, it is the original intent of the work.

    Jerry,

I hoped to imitate the organ having transcribed it directly from the Purcell organ music itself. Glad that you enjoyed it.

It took awhile to get to the part that I know so well, (or at least for me to recognize it) but indeed it did. Very well done! Beautiful arrangement and very nicely played!

I really enjoyed this - excellent realization.

Have you ever heard David Maslanka's Symphony No. 4? Fantastic treatments and variations on the Doxology. Here's a clip:

I have never played a more emotionally affecting piece of music in my life.

    Janet,

I am glad that you enjoyed the work. I find it to be a very powerful work on its own. But with the addition of the brass it is breathtaking.
