Free or Low Cost Sampler or Sample Player?

    Hey guys,

I want to get into sample development to some degree, but I don't have the budget for an expensive sampler right now. Are there any decent free or low cost samplers or sample players that would help me get my feet wet before I get into deep sample work? Thanks so much!

There's one called Paax, on the cover DVD that comes with Computer Music magazine - it's probably available through KVR somewhere. I haven't ever used it, but it seems to be fairly well-specced for a freebie.

You should also check Linuxsampler which runs on linux, windows AND Mac OS X

If you don't mind a little simple coding, sfz can do almost everything the big boys can do. Help here and here and just a little bit here. And, it's free.

If you learn to use SFZ, you have a nice open door. There are several samplers that are using this file format, including the mentioned Shortcircuit. ARIA from Garritan is using it, and also Dimension from cakewalk.

BTW, Nice Blog Rob Weber. Very interesting.

On the Mac side, I've not been unhappy with VSamp (shareware). Minimal sampler, but easy to program and low footprint.

Wusikstation is really good and often overlooked. It supports .sfz, round robin, lots.

In fact, there is a GB running running right now.
