    Technical problem - CD writer

    This is a horror story.

    Plextor DVDR PX-760A.
    Windows XP64.
    Sonar 64 bits version installed.

I cannot make audio cd's anymore. All writing programs tell me that they are writing, but the result is a blank CD. Writing anything else but audio succeeds. Copying existing audio Cd's also goes.

What is happening? Some strange setting hidden in those dark, very dark windows register settings? I can't remember changing anything.

    Hi Raymond,

This is more a question for a Windows forum, but checking Plextor Europe, here's the firmware update page for the 760A.

    Firmware:

    http://www.plextor-europe.com/techni...=DVD-Recorders

When one changes from XP to XP64, the drivers have to be updated. (I think the update is supposed to take care of this junk, but it rarely catches all of it).

Beyond that, the "burning" software might need to be brought up to level with XP64. So, depending on who wrote your DVD software, you might scour their site, looking for an XP64-specific update.

    Burning software:

    Best of luck,
    Darwin

    Raymond,

Don't forget to look in the windows event viewer for any error messages.

Perhaps your masters are still 24-bit? CD's need to be 16-bit files for them to play in most devices and be Redbook compliant.

... and that is not the case, but thank you for reminding me.

Just a thought, but have you recently changed your brand of media?
Also make sure you''re trying to write to CD-R and not CD-RW media.

No and no. I just spoke to my son and he had a similar problem in the past.
    His conclusion: The Plextor died!

I am not convinced, but it seems that way.
Now back to testing this bloody thing with PlexTools Pro.

Don't overlook the drivers suggestion Raymond. It sounds like that to me.

I searched the Web and found no 64bits drivers. I updated the firmware to the latest available.

Since I am using XP64/SONAR5 I made that Chopin-sequence and put that on CD with success. Since I am using XP64/SONAR8 - in time a bit later - I made another piano CD with success, using Plextools (sometimes I use the writing/burning part of Adobe Audition) - date stamp 5-1-2009 rather recent, don't you think so?). All recorded on the same media!!!

All tests (Q-tests, etc...) were successful, but still the DVDR doesn't write any AUDIO info to the CD. When loading again: windows says (and not only windows): empty CD, while others are flagged as AudioCD.

Maybe it has to do with the laser intensity/setting/lens. When I purchased the full Pro Steinway, during installation time, I encountered problems reading the installation DVD's. I had to lower down the reading speed, else those DVD's were un-readable. Maybe some manyfacturers fault... or whatever.

    Tomorrow I will purchase another.

Thank you all folks for your effort to get this sorted out, for now I have to give my wife the attention she needs.

Really - the Plextor died on me. So R.I.Plextor. Mounted a new one: Samsung SATA version, SH-S223B. Back in production.
