    The Passing of the Legends

Well what a strange week it has been...

    Ed McMahon
    Farrah Fawcett
    Michael Jackson
    and now Billy Mays.

A succession of celebrities have died this past week. First it was the death of a late night legend, then the most popular of Charlie's Angels, then the death of the King of Pop, and now the king of infomercials. Each of these icons have shaped popular culture in their own way.

Although these popular icons are often larger-than-life, these celebrities are like us all.

I’m not sure what to make of this. It seems like an era is coming to an end.

Thoughts and Prayers go out to Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, Billy Mays and their family and friends.

Life is short. Enjoy every moment you have.

Definitely a strange week, Gary. I echo your sentiments to the families of all these outstandingly talented celebs who are suddenly gone.

And poor David Carradine was lost recently too.

    Life is indeed short.

Sadly those of us in Philadelphia had two more to deal with, a wonderful sportscaster, Gary Papa, and a curmudgeonly, yet down-to-earth talk show host, Irv Homer.

It really has been a bizarre week!

Add comedian Fred Travalena and TV sitcom pioneer Gale Storm to the list.

Makes me feel sad for the people who pass away each day without all the fanfare. They were "somebody" to the people in their lives, but most of us never even know they're gone -- or that they even existed.

C'est la vie. Make the best of it while we're here.
    Best Regards,
    Ernie

Sadly celebrity turns everything upside down. I remember when Mother Teresa died; surely one of the most deserving people of our generation, but, in the UK, her passing only just warranted a short column around page 8 or 9 of the papers, because she went and died in the few days following Princess Di.

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice there is.
