    Monitor Speaker Possibilities

    Collective Wisdom...

I can obtain the following monitors--used--at a price within my budget.
Please help me decide if either is worth obtaining.
Right now, new Rokit 8s, as much as I might like them, are not within the budget allotment.

    1. Alesis Monitor One Passive

    2. Roland DS 50 A

    Any info/advice/warnings/caveats appreciated!

Do you have a power amp? If not, the Alesis might be out of budget anyway...

Hi, Rob...yes, I have *an* amp. Perhaps not the world's best, but *an* amp.

Is any powered speaker better that any passive speaker?

PS--coming to Peoria in a few weeks.

Hey Jim, I use Mackie HR 824s and love them. They are powered. I don't know your budget and am unfamiliar with the speakers you mention, but the Mackies are very good.

I almost didn't consider them because I remember Mackie as standing for the "Most Agonizing Consoles Known In Existence" in the 80s! But these monitors are top notch in my opinion.

The Mackies are outside the budget line, unfortunately.

I am assuming that my Echo Indigo IO will only drive headphones & cannot drive passive speakers, yes?

After looking at the Indigo I don't think it can power passives without an amp. I may be wrong but it looks that way. I'm in Lisle, IL (near Naperville) on the way to Peoria I bet when you're traveling. I have a pair of Yamaha NS-10Ms that I could let go of. They're in perfect shape. Let me know your budget (PM me or email if ya want) and I'll letcha know if I'll let 'em go. They are just gathering dust.

    Hello my friend Mr. Snor
If aktiv or passiv, there are always amps and speakers... . :-)

I have got the Alesis Monitor two. You know them?

They are very cool and especially the bass comes out at a low level.

I use a pair of Alesis Monitor One speakers in my studio and really like them. They put out a fantastic sound for relatively small speakers. I would never part with them. Their "Superport" feature provides big cajones!

    Larry...

Thanx for the endorsement...I can latch onto a set of Monitor Ones at a low price, but then I'd need to get an amp as well since the Echo Indigo IO will not drive speakers...

So I'm still trying to sort out what's better...powered speakers or Monitor One Passives + amp. Gotta figure out what kind of amp I can get without breaking the budget.

    Re: Monitor Possibilities

    Hi Jim,
trying to compare powered (active) speakers to non-powered (passive) speakers is not possible since I don't know of a manufacturer that makes the same exact model speaker with and without power.

I almost never recommend powered speakers, and I don't have experience with the two you mentioned, although it sounds like I would go with the Mackies and any decent stereo power amp.
