Topic: GVI/GS4 on Windows 7

    Re: GVI/GS4 on Windows 7

    Asus P5KC
    Intel core2 duo E8400
    RME 9652
    8GB
    Windows 7 64bit

Looking at the Giga4 installation, it looks like the MIDI ports might be controlled through one of the Giga4 .dlls, which I'm assuming is 64bit (and therefore can't be referenced/loaded by 32bit apps).

I've installed LoopBe30 and that's given me a method of controlling GS4. I wonder if the non-Giga4-ports introduces any kind of latency.

Contemplating starting the process of moving my sample libraries over to Kontakt 3 :/

I can tell you from first hand experience that GS4 was never beta'd with Win 7. In fact the last release of GS4 came out a year before the beta copy of Win 7 was even available.
I have built several machines similar to your hardware setup using XP x64 and I would recommend it to you. I've had no complaints from customers, far from it...and like I've said on other posts it's far more stable than GS3 ever was.
Before you get yourself entangled in another can of worms with Kontakt you ought to try x64.
    Best wishes, jc

XP 64 is very difficult to get these days.

I do like the idea of XP 64 but unfortunately you may be stuck with using sequencers that only support it.

I've had stable versions of GS until I ran into GS4.

The only problem I can see with Kontakt is giga file conversion.

    Definitely not.

Anyone else used GS4 on Vista/Windows7 64 that could let me know if they have the Giga4 midi ports? I'm thinking this is my 32 bit sequencer not being able to see the 64 bit GS4 midi ports? But this seems kinda crazy to me
    Could you post a screenshot.

The machine also dual boots XP64 and that works perfectly for me as well. I was going with Vista/Windows7 more to future proof my setup. A lot of hardware manufacturers now seem to have abandoned XP64, driver-wise.

Dual booted into x64 to check out this MIDI port issue and I can confirm it's also happening there, so it doesn't seem to be a Windows 7 / Vista specific issue. I experimented with some 64bit/32bit hosts to see what happened. It looks like the 64bit Kontakt sees the output ports fine. 32bit Battery/Guitar Rig fail to:

I'm guessing it's down to MIDI ports being handled by GMIDI4.dll, which is a 64bit DLL?

Other than that, the machine seems to be working and it runs so smoothly. I've tried stressing Gigastudio a little and it held up fine (BSOD'd when I went to shut down the machine, but I've had that one XP64 also). Kontakt 32bit VST is having a minor issue with FL Studio but it's workaroundable and I am more inclined to think that's FL Studio being weird.

Bit OT but does anyone know if GS3 will run on Windows 7 - I heard from a friend that this might be possible due to new features in Windows 7?

    Re: GVI/GS4 on Windows 7

In case this helps someone, I ran into this same issue and fixed it without reinstalling.

The reason the syncrosoft driver issue appeared for you is because the registry key the driver is stored in changes with 64-bit windows, especially windows 7.

The registry location GVI apps look in for the syncrosoft info (specifically the list of plugged-in license dongles) is:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\SynasUSB\Enum

Once the Syncrosoft driver is upgraded to a 64-bit windows 7 version this location changes to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\synusb64\Enum

Of course GVI and other VI's that use GVI don't know that the location has changed. If you manually recreate the same registry values found in the new location in the location that GVI apps look for them, it will make the GVI apps work.

I'm sure it would run on W7 Pro with the XP virtual environment. GS4 will not run on W7x64 unless you have a card that supports GSIF 2.1 drivers. There are few of those and they are $$$.

GVI worked fine for me in W7x64.

I might try installing GS3 and see if it works.

The answer is NO for W7x64. While many of my 32 bit apps can be installed on 64 bit system, GS3 will not install.

    GVI works in W7x64.

GS4 will work but you need the hardware for 64 bit. Otherwise it will be a Rewire client and there is no 64bit Rewire yet.

So you have 2 options if you want to run W7x64.

    1. Keep an XP partition and dual boot if you need to run Gigastudio.
    2. Run W7 Professional and run Giga in the XP mode.

Or say goodbye to all of your gig files and jump on the Kontakt bandwagon. Learn how to program in Kontakt and spend a life time reconstructing your gig files into Kontakt. Importing them is a crap shoot.

I really hate to say goodbye to the Giga stuff since GS3, GS4 were great. Only GVI has kept me from clearing my drive space of gig files.
