As always, David, some extremely intelligent and fascinating writing here. Such a tale told in this piece, but without being imposing, if that makes sense.

This work makes me think of all the things that go on around us in this world, but to which most of us unaware. Almost like an 'underground' that only certain types are privy to.

Did you ever see the David Lynch film, Blue Velvet? It's kind of that feel that I get from this new piece.

Very thought provoking and unique work, David.

    Thank you.

    Best wishes,
    Paul

This is great! Very atmospheric. Did you use GPO 4 with the choir sounds (I haven't listened to them yet so I don't know how they sound)? At times a little murky - very evocative of an underwater journey - deep under water, like weird fish with lights dangling off of their foreheads deep... I very much enjoyed this.

Thumbs up Re: DEVIL'S SEA - Choir & Orchestra (Sosnowski)

    Hi David!

As always, listening to your music is a challenge and an education for me.

This piece evokes for me images of desolate lakes or seas, with the soprano ooo's bringing forth sinister mists that disorient and confuse.

The trumpet opens up a clear vista where one sees -- what? it is hard to make out, and one stretches one's neck for a better look at the mystery.

Now after listening to your piece, I feel inspired to compose more and hopefully "mo' betta"

    It's good to be back.

    All my best, David,

    Karen

    David,

This starts, for me, on the brink of a great cinematic -> "fog". Your signature compositional gestures slowly begin to rise.

A beautifully haunting combination of the theatrical, and may I say, your modern touch. A smooth mixture; lightly peppered subtle jolts, and otherworldly singing is very captivating David.

What was on your mind at the time? This is very interesting work.

    Hi again David;
I am now more familiar with this piece, on second listening, and find you are quite an experimenter, with the far-reaching stylistic innovations of a mystic visionary, hats off to you for your boldness! You have good control over your resources though and there are certainly intricate nuances behind the smooth facade. Very good that you post here, I feel lucky to hear your work! Thank you!

    David,

My congratulations on yet another fine work of art. It is simply beautiful, the evil one's dwelling painted with amazing colors, dark and sinister. Thank you.

    Wow!

David, I like it a lot! I think you compose these music "with" the sounds, right?

    David,

After your long absence from writing, it's good to see you back in the saddle. And some good writing it is. Sketch? A very polished sketch. Even with a "slender motivic skeleton" there is plenty of your characteristic interplay and an abundance of detail. I like the dark and polished colors you've chosen. Very evocative.

As you know, I spent 20 years at sea and when I heard this it conjured up a memory of a Devils Sea. It wasn't a typhoon or hurricane, both of which I have experienced. Rather, it was was a dead calm sea off of Thailand. We passed within 50 yards of a small seagoing fishing boat that was drifting. The cabin had no walls and was open to the elements. And there wasn't a soul onboard. Nobody. Gone. Your piece really portrayed that scene for me.

    David,

I have listened to Devil's Sea several times, not only because your music is such a joy to listen to, but also because I will soon be posting a choral work of my own and need to study others' handling of those tricky choir patches.

Along with your trademark meticulous and inventive use of the orchestra, I was impressed by the way you use what I assume is the choir patch from GPO4. It is quite convincing, evoking in my mind Sirens from Debussy's Nocturnes.

    Fine work!

Wow! This has a great feel to it. A really warm, big, deep sound. Wow! This is definitely one of my favourites of yours David. This is really nice. I love the opening in particular, and also the held string parts. It's all very good.

And as others have said, this evokes a lot of underwater images, a deep open space.

I love it. This will definitely be listened to several times through.
