Hi David,

As usual, this is a strong offering and a little different for you. It of course will go on my Greatest Hits of David Sonowski CD. I especially liked the playful mood swings and the hints of chordal structure. Your linear quality of thinking still alows for the traditional chord sense even (if I may be so bold) though I don't believe you write with that structure in mind. I am in agreement with Rhap that the long major chord at the end was a wonderful sumation.

It's a captivating piece indeed. The string articulations were fine with me; I only found the percussion a bit unnatural, but overall a good sound. I was reminded (again) of Copland, but with a more independent bass line. I like the slow movement that is caused by the overlapping lines of instrument groups. It also leads to a very flowing release of tension and some great orchestration moments (around 2/3). Well done!

I agree on the percussion... there are a few places
where it just doesn't "gel" for me, either. I've got to
figure out a way to damp the reverb on the bottom,
for one thing... too ringy.

Many thanks, Theo, for the kind comparison to
Mr. Copland. For some reason autumn makes me think
of the way he used woodwinds; so I borrow on that,
somewhat.

Hi David,

Listening now --

I like the way it starts and then builds, then subsides, then builds again and so on. It gives me the feeling of waves on the ocean during this first part.

Dynamism, contrast, Karen. Even when I write
a bad piece, I don't forget to pay attention to
that. It is change, contrast, that moves music
from one place to another.

I also hear a tenderness in this piece, partly I think in the way the orchestra seems to follow and "support" the flute, and also in the legato and gentle harmonies of the strings.

I love autumn. It always shows, I guess.

A little past halfway, the way the tension builds intrigues me, and then the way it resolves to what feels to me like a clear glassy lake of sound.

The main reason I even posted this one... there
are a few moments of interesting orchestration,
I think.

The way you intermix tension, climactic moments and resolutions many times during a piece is something I want to learn from.

"Contrast" should be emblazoned on the heads of
composition students, right along with "Modulate,
modulate!"... rofl.

At the end, the way it resolves to that quiet unflamboyant major chord is just beautiful.

This piece is so lovely, David.

A very beautiful piece.

I caution, Karen, that this piece is not a good example
for study in many ways. Structurally, it's a basket case.

Isn't this a miracle that one can compose such a nice piece of music? It intruigued me from the very first opening up to the end, wondering about the way it developed from one dramatic accent to the other, filled with motion and emotion.

This is music!!!
