Every single patch has it's own amount of custom reverb. The snare for example is saturated in it, while something like the Trombones have the least to preserve it's timbre (not muddy it).
Lots of things have EQ on them, including the lower strings. Yes, it brings out the video-gamey synthyness of the lower strings, but this way they sound less muddy. I feel that to compensate for not having higher quality string samples libraries will raise the lower frequencies to muddy up the strings. If it sounds like synth, it sounds like synth, I'd rather it be less muddy. =)
I also tried to make the timpani less muddy by lowering the frequencies around 150Hz (low-mid) and raising the frequencies around 2.5-20kHz (mid-high to high).
