I love this hymn. I did a brass quintet arrangement of it a few years ago for a funeral.

I found it a challenge because as you know like any hymn it's repetitive. But that makes it kind of fun coming up with reasonable variations to keep the interest up. I also chose to "compose" a little interlude to connect the verses and also serve as an intro.

The orchestration is done well here. Personally I'd like to hear a little more counterpoint on the verses after the first verse is presented in a more homophonic fashion. Make sense? Maybe come up with some sort of accompaniment to vary the verses.

Just my opinion of course and it's worth what you pay for it

    Nice work.

    Thanks for listening, Steve.
I was thinking about the character of a hymn.
I was thinking of how a church organ would perform this. Mostly
repetitive, but using various tone sources.
In this case, the 1st verse was all brass; 2nd was woodwind +tuba.
the 3rd transposed & with full band playing.

    Gary:

The Navy Hymn is one of my favorites. It is majestic and, at the
same time, meditational. Your arrangement is really good. Too
    bad a band doesn't have strings............but that's another story....lol

    Great job Gary.

    Hi Jack,
    Thanks for listening.
This song has a definite impact during any Navy Ceremony. It compares with the Barber Adagio in its impact.
    It is also thought provoking...
As far as Bands are concerned, you can't be "picky"".....lol
