S.Rahmaninov's 'Lilac' | a live recording accompanied by GPO strings

    Hello!

This is a recording of me singing the wonderful 'Lilac' by S.Rahmaninov, accompanied by a pianist (obviously) and as of now, by GPO strings orchestra as well!

I remember when I first heard this song, it immediately left me breathless.. amazing stuff. So I told me singing teacher I wanted to perform this piece and 2 weeks ago I had the chance. It worked out quite well, I thought. The recording is not the best, but the only one I got.. and then I had this incredible idea of adding strings to it with GPO and I've finished it now. Here's the final mix [although I might still tweak it a bit, dynamics etc - tell me if/when you think the piano gets too 'lost' in the string accompaniment]:

And the lyrics, if you want to read them, in Russian [original language, the one I'm performing it in] and an English translation below:

    'Сирень' op.21 no.5 [1902]

    По утру, на заре,
    По росистой траве,
    Я пойду свежим утром дышать;
    И в душистую тень,
    Где теснится сирень,
    Я пойду свое счастье искать...

    В жизни счастье одно
    Мне найти суждено,
И то счастье в сирени живёт,
    На зелёных ветвях,
    На душистых кистях
    Моё бедное счастье цветёт..

    'Lilac' op.21 no.5 [1902]

    In the morning, at daybreak,
    over the dewy grass,
    I will go and breathe the crisp dawn;
    and in the fragrant shade,
    where the lilac crowds,
I will go to seek my happiness...

    In life, only one happiness
was meant for me to discover,
and that happiness lives in the lilacs,
    in the green boughs,
    in the fragrant bunches,
    my poor happiness blossoms..

Wow Brindle - that sure is different!!
I thought it was a great performance and very passionate!! When I went and read through the words, I was amazed at their translated meaning! What a strange idea, in love with the shade and scent of Lilacs!
Most eclectic contribution I've heard, but I really enjoyed it!

    Thank you for sharing!
    Best regards,

    Brindle:

    Excellent performance.........

Enjoyed your vocal talent and the addition of GPO
strings. We should all be grateful for the musical
technology we now possess and for the abundant
applications it provides. Creativity is so greatly
enhanced that there is no limit to what one can
accomplish with little investigation and hard work.

    Great listen, Brindle

The strings are tastefully sequenced and mixed in at the right level, but they do not sound like they're in the same room. I'd suggest using a dark small/medium room reverb, or something that has a lot of early reflections...or maybe you could get by with rolling off some treble on the strings.

I enjoyed the piece very much.
