Topic: Randy Edelman's Gettysburg

  1. #1

    Randy Edelman\'s Gettysburg

I had a small part in the production of
this film (Location recording) and I had always heard that the score was not an orchestra but samples and synths.

    The score is amazing!

Has anyone in the group heard it?
I could post an mp3. I was wondering if
anyone here could pick out what libraries may have been used.

    Thanks all

I\'d heard the same thing years ago about the score, but never was able to confirm it. I own the cd, but there is no mention of any orchestra on it. I\'d like to know what was used as well, if anyone here could answer.

I read an interview with Randy E, last night
and HE says that he only uses his samples and synths to compose.

But, when you really take a hard listen to the score, there seems to be a blend.

If Gettysburg is entirely synthetic then Randy Edelman is the best synth/sample composer on the planet.

I have the CD and it sounds like a blend to me.

I agree!! Again, as I said, it was a rumor amongst some of the post crew.

PS. Im glad you guys dig the score. I work in post and compose as a hobby. This score
is why I compose more now than ever.

    Re: Randy Edelman\'s Gettysburg

First and foremost, please let me state that
Randy Edelman is my favorite composer.

The movie Gettysburg, and the score, is very dear to me.

I had been a Civil War Re-enactor for 8 years of my life. I have several friends, including myself, that were paid extras for the film. The choreographer, is a dear friend of mine.

I was only putting forth a rumor that was said amongst some of the post crew. Every website I visit about Randy E states that he blends. I was just asking if anyone knew what he used.

I was not saying that I knew
for a fact that it was ALL samples and synths.

The score gives me hope as a composer,
especially, if some of it was sampling!

    ps. no orchestra was named!

    Re: Randy Edelman\'s Gettysburg

Orchestras are almost never mentioned on Hollywood recordings, so nothing odd there. Without even having heard the score, I can\'t believe that it shouldn\'t have been recorded by a real orchestra just like all other Hollywood movies.

Simon, it only went direct to theaters in Europe. In the US it was an HBO or some other cable channel movie, so it wouldn\'t have surprised me for it to be sampler based. In fact, you can most definitely tell that some of the instruments are sampled or synthesized.

However the overall sound quality of the score indicates to me that there are at least some real instruments, esp the trumpets.

Regardless, it is a good score.

    Re: Randy Edelman\'s Gettysburg

The film was shown in select theaters in the US.

Gettysburg, PA. (for an entire year) also, Princeton, NJ.

Then it was aired as a mini series on TNT.
