This is the fifth piece in "Our American Heritage."
The pioneers who settled the West probably started out with great optimism and hope for a life of
prosperity and even wealth in California. But they were immediately faced with a vast prairie to be
crossed. Then came rugged mountains which must be struggled across. After these hardships,
when they felt the worst was over, they might be attacked by hostile Native Americans. After
surviving all of this, they must have been jubilant to reach their destination.
