I think what pisses people off is that composers (most) feel like little guys. They see samples as a thing that helps them achieve their music without having to rent out an orchestra (which there is NO WAY people can afford to do every time they write a piece). For most of us, it's the only way we'll ever get to hear our music.
Sample companies have come to our rescue, and they typically act like they are our friends. This makes composers feel like the developers are on "their side" (and in many cases they are). But when a product comes out, and they can't afford it I think they feel a little betrayed. Then we realize that sample companies aren't really our friends. They are a business, just like Best Buy and Amazon. Their number one goal is to make money.
I'm not demonizing the sample developers, and I'm not justifying customers getting angry. I'm just expressing the feeling I think a lot of us have.
