Hey Dave, that wasn't pointed at you or any 1 individual. I love the intelligent discussion about this stuff on NS, but I do cringe a little bit every time a new sample library is announced in the forums, because it will inevitably be followed by 10 posts saying "It's too expensive." Seriously, you can pretty much set your watch by it. And I've noticed over the years that there are a handful of users who just whiiiiiiiiiiine about every new product announcement! And I just want to tell them, "Consider the alternative: without these developers, you'd be faced with the prospect of paying 5 figures to hire an orchestra for a day, or you could just not write any music at all."
I love the idea of the loyalty discount, a la "if you already own multiple SAM libraries then we take 10% off" or something like that. But I understand why they wouldn't... they're a small operation and to produce this stuff must cost a fortune. And I've also wondered what Native Instruments must charge them for the ability to license the NI player + to have an icon in your NI library pane, and to then do all updates via the NI Service Center. Figure in the costs of packaging & DVD reproduction, and suddenly $1100 for this package doesn't seem to be showing a whole lot of profit for them! Or at least, not as much as some of us might be assuming they're making.
Does anyone out there know what NI charges a sample library to use its Kontakt Player & to have an icon in the library window (vs just pulling up Kontakt-formatted sounds from your hard drive)? That would be a very interesting piece of information, just for curiosity's sake.
Kerry
