    What Is Music

There was recently much debate about AI and composing. Someone wrote that there needs to be a definition of "music" and "intelligence".

As I understand it intelligence is a combination of intellect and mature emotional development. Well, that's the one for us humans at least.

    But this is about "music".

Here are two examples of experimental works from the early seventies.

This is Robert Fripp and Brian Eno's first coroboration. It's quite relaxing.

This is Lou Reed's very controversial Machine Metal Music. It's not relaxing.

Is music sounds that have been manipulated in some fashion with the intent of communicating something to the listener. From an elevator to a concert hall there is communication going on. Maybe that something is not definable.

Oh, Phil, you just like asking provocative questions, don't you?

As much as I'd like to be the first to weigh in on this discussion, I'll instead offer a link to a Wikipedia article that provides a rather thorough examination of the subject. It should give everyone a lot of food for thought, and perhaps will spice up whatever debate goes on here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Definition_of_music

This should be an interesting thread!

    Re: What Is Music

There's "music" that could possibly have and agreed upon definition, and "musical" that is purely subjective. I contend that the 2nd word is the more important one, and no two people will (or need to) agree on a definition.

Regarding those to examples, I didn't find either piece musical.

I found the electronic effects in the first one "cutsy" and irritating ... and that's about all that was present. I managed to get through about 4 minutes of it and was irritated that I wasted that much time on it. And that was the better of the 2 pieces.

The second sample was irritating noise with a bunch of distortion dumped on top of it. Of course, I also apply that description to the sound of an electric guitar so I won't be surprised if others might find this piece musical. I'm very out of step with the general public.

I'm right there with you, Pat. But if we're in a small minority, I say -- so what!

Well, the second one was made with only electric guitar feed back so the guitars were playing themselves (NI- No Intelligence) and then it was layered on to tracks. It spawned the genre "noise music" and went on to become a gold double album.

O Ye Readers, In This Question There Be Dragons and Terrible Things.

    However,

I stumbled across this [and inserted some comments]:

An artistic [here I read "intentional" but that might be pushing it] form of auditory communication incorporating instrumental [including kitchen sinks, etc.] or vocal [human or otherwise - in fact voice can be considered an instrument] tones [silence and noise are implied by association] in a structured [durational] and continuous [in time, metered or not] manner.
In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice there is.

it's an easy answer: "music" is what I like. the other stuff, isn't "music".

That's fine with me as long as I don't have to listen.
