    New iPad Announced

Today Apple announced the new iPad 2:.
The second-generation iPad from Apple is thinner, faster, lighter, and whiter, but not a radical departure from the original...
The new spec uses a dual-core A5 processor that promises to be twice as fast with nine times the graphics performance.
But the important thing is that iPad has become a sweet little music production system, Today, Apple also announced the upcoming availability of GarageBand for iPad2. This is something to get excited about. This could be the start of a new music tech revolution

They'll be available on March 11 in the U.S., so you better start getting in line tomorrow.

What revolution? Windows-based dual-core touch-screen netbooks with an USB sound card support everything right now. But they have the possibility to run all DAW, VSTi and everything.

Windows-based touchscreen netbooks are still too bloated and does not have enough processing power. iOS and Android are definitely slimmer (and less CPU hungry) in that regard. But just look at the video on the apple website. Touch sensitive screen when playing drums! How did they do that???

Ok, iPad is cool I understand. But what revolution can come from something that is from the point of technology not new, but still not mature. At the same time very limited and limiting and very expensive.

The "start" of the revolution is getting many people excited about music production on mobile devices. As it gains traction, prices should come down and capabilities increase. This should apply not only to iPad, but Windows, Android and Linux mobile devices.

    LOL! Good one, Michel!
In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice there is.

Apogee Jam guitar input for Mac and iOS devices gets your axe into GarageBand

Apogee Electronics has announced the new Jam device, which enables a digital connection for electric and bass guitars into iOS 4.2.1 (and greater) devices or into any Core Audio compatible apps on Mac. You can record straight into GarageBand if you like and use the built-in control knob to adjust your levels. That connectivity won't come for free, naturally, with a $99 MSRP slapped on this one. It'll start rocking stores in March -- plenty enough time to find another new drummer.

I'm predicting that the iPad will succeed in music creation where smart phones have failed. I really want to see fully-functional sequencers and notation solutions appear on this device, though.

However, running a library like GPO on a device like this would still be a problem. The libraries would have to be included within each app rather than being a library that is shared among apps due to the nature of iOS. Maybe for Motorola's Xoom and Android 3.0 Honeycomb we will see the development of the ability to plug and play sample libraries between apps.

Who at Apple chose the name iPad? Someone said that it sounds like a feminine hygiene product and I agree.
