Tchaikovsky Suite No 1 Op 43 has five movements. This fugue (excerpt) is from the 1st movement. The fugue is a common form of Bach. Tchaikovsky is the opposite of Bach in style. So it is surprising to see Tchaikovsky use this form. This is not the Tchaikovsky of the lavish ballet suite and it is not the Tchaikovsky of the formal symphonic form. His orchestra is small. Woodwinds and strings. Neither brass nor percussion. The result is a wonderful blending of the sounds of winds and strings.
