    Happy Birthday Elliott!

I saw the BSO rehearse his 100th bd concert (it was played in NY but the did the rehearsal in Boston). Great show. The BSO seems to play a lot of his music, a good thing in my opinion.

Actually, don't tell him this, but my Boxer is named "Elliot Carter" (one 't') - After a concert, when I asked my wife if she liked it or not she answered, "Yes, it was very soothing." My answer was, "Soothing? Not how I usually hear Elliott Carter's music described!" She loved the name and a month later we got Elliot.... (our Elliot's bd is 12/22 - 11 days after his namesake just 101 years later)

I performed the Elliott Carter woodwind quintet in Chicago many years ago. What an interesting piece and what an interesting composer. Happy Birthday and rest in peace.

Hi Rich - unless something happened very recently Elliott is still with us. Wikipedia says he has published 14 new pieces since his 100th birthday. At 100 he not only composed every day, he drew all of his own manuscript paper by hand. he might still be doing it that way...

Just this past week, I heard his piano music for the first time! I enjoyed it very much, but would not call it soothing.

I was impressed at his activity at age 103. My aim is to do likewise.

Oops, I made a mistake! But I did play the Carter Quintet. I was there for that!

Happy (alive) Birthday Elliott!! So Sorry about the mistake.

    Happy Boit-Day Elliott!
In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice there is.

I met Carter once, 30-some-odd years ago, when I was a college student and he had just turned 70. I remember thinking he seemed pretty young for his years even then.

I also remember that somehow the subject of opera came up. He swore up and down that he would never, ever write an opera. So I was a bit surprised when I heard that he did write an opera 10 years or so ago, when he was well into his 90s!
