I feel I was actually fairly slow at learning compound meters, as I was never really taught how to count them, but after hearing and playing some pieces written with them (Take Five and the Mission Impossible theme to name a couple by those you mentioned ), I really took a liking to them and use them frequently in percussion.
After my mentioning (and then your furthur commenting) on your solid handling of the compound meters, I was motivated to see if any of Hank Levy or Don Ellis' stuff was up on YouTube ... there's a ton! Not much w/ actual footage, but plenty of their music.

One Don Ellis performance in particular that I always liked from when I 1st bought the LP "Live At The Fillmore" (oh yes he did say LP! ... it was a vinyl record, circa 1972 while I was still in the Navy!), is a Hank Levy composition titled "A Rock Odyssey" ... it's in 7/4 and 12/4 (but the 12/4 is 2-2-3, 2-3) and is really a well written piece ... very exciting music! There is a YouTube of the Hank Levy Tribute Band playing it last year in Maryland ... if you get some time, check it out!

Best regards,

Frank
