I am glad you are getting involved at the Forums, Jupeku. I notice you have a post in General Discussion about the new Garritan Pipe Organs. That is the Forum where people go the most, so you can post questions and comments there and the most people will see them.

Staccato is played in GPO like you said, with short notes, but you don't need to make quick volume changes, it's easier to do than that. With Garritan instruments, the harder you play a note, which gives you higher Velocity values, changes the way a note begins. Hard velocity gives you the sharpest beginning to notes, and lower values gives you slower starts good for softer passages.

The sound balance between instruments is something you have complete control of. It isn't that the balance is automatically what you need for a particular piece of music. See in the screenshot I posted, I moved the mixer sliders in ARIA to balance the instruments the way I wanted, and then the MIDI volume control does the rest. This demonstration was done very quickly, and things like the balance could be done even better with more time.

But yes, you can balance the sound the same way in all Garritan Libraries.

I hope you get GPO soon and start enjoying making music with it.

Thank you Randy for that useful demonstration and the midi file for it.

Incidentally, that lush "hollywood sound" a la ewql gold & platinum is delivered by the much cheaper GIO! So now I can have orchestrals sounding just like everybody else if I want to! Hats off to Jupeku for seeking his own sound, says I.

    Hi Randy,

Is that a screenshot of the new version? It is much easier to read than the version I have.

Hi, Martin - Yes, that's the new ARIA which is now available to people getting the new Garritan Pipe Organ Library. It should also soon be available to people with the other Garritan Libraries.

    Hi,

This thread and the demo was just what I need in helping to decide whether to buy GPO4. I'm confused by one thing, though. I have used the Garritan solo Stradivaria Kontakt instrument for some time, and find it to be pretty good. The solo violin in this demo seems far worse. It's when the violin comes in to the demo (about 1 minute in) that all realism goes out the window for me - especially the bit of portamento. What I'm really after is a good virtual string quartet, so the things I want to know before buying are : Is the good Stradivari violin still there in GPO4? Are the viola and cello instruments as good as it?

The Strad library is a dedicated instrument using 4 velocity layers with harmonic alignment and morphing between them. Plus the attacks are separate samples. The solo strings in GPO do not have this ability and are just one velocity with just sustain and pizzicato articulations. There has been talk of an upgrade to the older Garritan strings library that would have the solo string capabilities of the strad for all the different instruments but that library has never materialized.

One thing to remember is the Strad library cost more than GPO for just one instrument. There was also a solo Gofriller cello that was programmed just like the Strad.
