An idea: A Listening Room Festival

Hi, Michael - Good to see you here.

You came up indirectly on a thread today in the Listening Room. Jim Snyder posted a rendition of the original Star Trek theme, so I posted the link to the website I still maintain that has all the Star Trek: The Next Generation orchestral shootout entries - the contest you won a prize in:

As qccowboy has nicely pointed out, you have indeed missed the point - I think maybe you haven't read through all the posts here on this Listening Room Festival thread. Naturally people have different opinions on what it means to "use Garritan instruments in your posted music" - Some people do seem think music should be close to 100% Garritan, while I go by Gary Garritan's request which is, "... We ask that if you post music here that at it uses some of the sounds of our libraries. This makes sense since it is a Garritan Forum and we want to focus on our user's music..."

In all my "Tom Sawyer" posts I've been currently posting, I use a lot of instruments from different Libraries. The majority of what I use is Garritan, but I'm not a percentage cop.

Most of us are saying PLEASE post music, AND, something new on this thread, brought up by DPDAN, is that if something uses non-Garritan instruments, it would be much appreciated if the post can start out with a list of what those specific non-Garritan instruments are in the music, so listeners aren't confused.

That's all! I don't think anyone's "offended" when someone uses different strings - When there's offense taken, it's when someone totally ignores our host's simple request that we keep on topic with our music posts by using "some" of his instruments. And now, we're also saying that since the Forum is so slow, let's invite even totally non-Garritan pieces to go up as long as the poster clearly labels his posts accordingly and is thorough in his listing of what instruments he used.

The whole idea is to ENCOURAGE posting, not to discourage it.

--You're worrying far too much. POST YOUR MUSIC - Yes, you ARE misunderstanding. This thread is asking that you and everyone please post your music. Nobody's counting percentages - And I'm using myself as an example, I've had non-Garritan instruments play a significant role in some of my posts, but haven't worried in the least that I've gone against Gary's wishes, because I know I haven't. If someone else disagrees with me, and doesn't like my interpretation of the old guidelines - that's not my problem.

... and tomorrow I will march with a demonstration against bad weather (Amsterdam)....... can you imagine, this old grey dude marching along with all sorts of people, NON Garritan users for sure..... haha, though he has a windmachine in his library!

Hey Randy,

I was probably looking into it too much, but I was getting the feeling from some of the posters that our entries to the listening forum should be almost "demos" for Garritan, using almost only Garritan instruments. I didn't wish to rub anyone the wrong way by posting something different. I'll be posting some early sketch work for some stuff I've been working on shortly, and perhaps a few non garritan pieces I would like to share.

I'm really enjoying all the music that's being posted, and re posted. Great idea!

Here's an analogy I just came up with...

"Race Announcement"
General Motors of the USA is offering it's testing grounds track (Listening Room) to sponsor a "GM Race"
involving all General Motors cars, and is open to the public. GM (Garritan Music/Garritan Libraries).

Sign up today and bring your Corvette, Camaro, Chevelle, Trans Am or any GM car to the track (Listening Room).

Our main goal at the GM Race is to show spectators (soon to be GM owners) how well GM cars run and drive.
Anyone who disguises a Lamborghini with a Corvette body will be disqualified. This would be a dishonest
presentation to the crowd and the driver would be BOOed once his secret is unveiled.

We realize that some of the GM cars entering the race might have air cleaners, spark plugs and other
parts manufactured by companies other than GM, like Ford and even Mercedes, but as long as the body, engine and drivetrain are all GM, your car will pass tech, and your car will be entered.

And speaking of Varooooom! - Since last night, six new pieces have gone up in The Listening Room. We haven't seen that kind of action in ages - So Great!--the Listening Room Festival has officially commenced! Varooooooooom!
