Re: GPO Trumpets - is non-legato unision playing possible?

    Hello again Randy & Jim

Sorry for the slight thread bounce, I have been away from the UK for a couple of weeks. I was a little surprised by Randy’s comment about the poor quality mix; on investigation, I found that in my haste to post something before I left for Italy, I didn’t spot that Sonar X1 had turned on the Pro-Channel compressor during the final track bounce (known bug)! This excessive compression also completely clobbered the dynamics in the Horn and Brass sections (sorry Garritan). I have posted a corrected mix here if you have time to listen.

I am currently transcribing the woodwind section. If I ever get this personally challenging project finished, I will post the result to the Listening Room. Thank you again for your encouragement.

    Regards

Hi, Alan - Good to hear from you again.

In my last post, I wasn't going so far to say that your mix was of "poor quality," I was just mentioning the qualities it had which made it sound like it was done in Finale. And I mentioned some types of editing you can do in Sonar to make the recording more life-like.

Your new recording is a step up from the previous one. It's still sounding like a Finale file to me, very strict and accurate, but not very natural. But you did bring your Finale file into Sonar, OK -You mention that you accidentally had the compressor on in the previous file, and it is better with it off. You now need to take more advantage of the tools available in Sonar, starting with getting the quantization more blurred. Rendering a file like this in Finale, Human Playback, when used well, can provide the natural blurriness of note on-sets that can make Finale recordings sound good - but what you export is back to the inserted-note, quantized original. You also need to record the volume data for each instrument, preferably recorded in real time via a keyboard's mod wheel.

For a big cinematic piece like this, you need to bring more reverb in also, that will help a lot in getting a more exciting, big sound.

What you have is sounding fine for what it is, but I feel that since you're bothering to import into Sonar, you can do a lot more in the program to produce your recording.

    Hi...
    I'm still here...
If you want to send me the Finale File, I can work with it a bit between gigs and the day job.
